PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Mrs. Graham’s fourth grade at Zippel Elementary School has been selected as a regional winner in the MaineDOT Work Zone Safety poster contest. Each regional finalist will receive $200 for their class. The students now go on to the finals to compete for the $1,000 grand prize.
The public could visit www.mainebackseatdriver.com to vote for their favorite poster and determine which class will win the grand prize. Voting ended at midnight on December 22.
All seven regional winners and five honorable mention posters will be featured in the 2008 MaineDOT Work Zone Safety Poster Calendar. The MaineDOT Backseat Driver Poster Contest has always been held in March in support of Work Zone Safety Awareness Week in April.
This year’s contest was moved to the fall to accommodate school testing schedules.
Roadway work zones are a significant safety concern due to the vulnerability of workers in these zones and the changing conditions presented to the drivers.
For the seventh year in a row, the MaineDOT introduced their highly successful Backseat Driver Program.
This program is designed to raise awareness among Maine’s families about work zone safety.
Through this program, students learn about Maine roads, traffic signs and work zone safety tips.
