Happy New Year! I cannot believe that it is 2007. Where has the time gone? I am honored to be able to keep this article going and educate and entertain my readers.
I have been writing this article since the year 2000 and have been on the Board of Directors of the Central Aroostook Humane Society since the year 1997. It is amazing to be doing something I honestly love to do. Working with the humane society has become a part of who I am.
We always talk about New Year’s resolutions during this time of the year. Here are some from my own dogs:
• Zoe: I will try very hard to refrain from attacking any animal that gets onto Mommy’s bed. (I said I would try);
• Baxter: I will not eat horse poop as I am running through the barn on my way to the playpen;
• Rusty: I will try not to exercise so much, going to that 400 mph blast out of the barn each night is exhausting;
• Tucker: I will try not to be such a ‘bone head’ and work really hard on not barking at ghosts, chasing shadows and dealing with my personality disorder; and
• Tommy: I am going to try to get along better with my brother Rusty. He can’t help it if he is weird.
We should all try our best to make an impact on the lives of the unwanted animals of our area. How can we each do our part? Here are some suggestions: Have your pets spayed and neutered, license your dog so they can be returned to you if they are lost, educate others about responsible pet ownership, keep a watchful eye out for those who have no voice, report animal abuse or neglect to law enforcement, volunteer time at the Central Aroostook Humane Society, be sure to assess your pets’ ‘quality of life’ and make sure to make it the best it can be, groom your pet, offer to walk the neighbor’s dog, collect papers for the humane society, call the Central Aroostook Humane Society and ask what you can do.
You don’t have to own or even like animals to make a positive impact on their lives.
