Ski teams finally get underway

    MARS HILL, Maine – A marked lack of snow forced the postponement of several early-season high school ski meets but all area teams hit the slopes and trails last week in meets at Big Rock and Fort Kent.

    Saturday’s meet, hosted by Presque Isle at Big Rock, found the teams slaloming down the family trails, which forced slower than normal times.

    On the girls’ side, Presque Isle pulled out the team win in the first race with 25 points followed by Fort Kent at 32, Central Aroostook at 58, Mattanawcook Academy at 69, Madawaska at 76, Lee Academy at 79 and Caribou at 88.

    Jenn Steeves of Presque Isle pulled out the individual win with a two-run combined time of 53.03. She was followed byAllison Charette of Fort Kent at 55.72 and Brooke Smith of Central Aroostook with a time of 56.14.

    Other Presque Isle finishers included Kristena McKenney in fifth at 59.79; Molly Hamel in ninth at 1:06.38; Hallie Bartlett in 10th at 1:08.57; Anne Elish in 17th at 1:15.68; and Amber Griffin in 22nd at 1:22.60.

    Other Central Aroostook finishers included Nicole McQuade in seventh at 1:02.45; Paige Findlen in 23rd at 1:23.72; and Amanda Sam in 25th 1:27.71.

    Caribou’s lone finisher was Monique Cyr in 13th at 1:09.14.

    Fort Kent took the second race by a slim 30-32 margin over Presque Isle. Central Aroostook put up 41 points followed by Mattanawcook at 70, Madawaska at 77, Lee Academy at 78 and Caribou at 98.

    In the boys’ first race, Presque Isle pulled out a 25-29 win over Central Aroostook. Fort Kent took third with 55 points followed by Caribou at 61, Madawaska at 112, Fort Fairfield at 166, Lee Academy at 178 and Mattanawcook at 191.

    Lucas Mathers from Presque Isle took first in the race with a two-run combined time of 48.69. He was followed by Caleb Swanberg of Caribou at 49.36 and Derek Smith of Central Aroostook at 49.41.

    Other Presque Isle finishers included Dayne Waddell in fourth at 50.69; Eric Morris in eighth at 51.95; Kurtis Perkins in 12th at 52.70; Joel Whittaker in 14th at 54.32; Nick Shaw in 18th at 55.97; Adam Chandler in 20th at 56.50; Sam Porter in 29th at 1:00.80; Thomas Barnes in 30th at 1:02.08; and Justin Towle in 45th at 1:09.17.

    Other Central Aroostook finishers included Ethan Garrison in fifth at 50.71; Greg Cousins in 10th at 52.24; Travis McDonald in 11th at 52.40; Caleb Jewett in 15th at 54.60; Ethan Stiles in 19th at 56.27; Matt Graves in 25th at 57.84; Jordan Robinson in 34th at 1:04.30; and Ethan Kelly in 39th at 1:06.35.

    Other Caribou finishers included Jordan Powers in 16th at 55:12; Justin McLauchlan in 21st at 57.62; Chris Stairs in 22nd at 57.62; Jon Noyes in 27th at 58.70; Riley Foster in 32nd at 1:03.78; Taylor Jepson in 35th at 1:04.41; Ethan McDuffie in 43rd at 1:07.83; Timothy Freme in 46th at 1:09.80; Spencer McElwain in 47th at 1:10.45; and Matt Martin in 50th at 1:24.52.

    Fort Fairfield’s lone finisher was Mitchell McLaughlin in seventh at 51.21.

    Central Aroostook took the second race with a 23-34 win over Presque Isle. Fort Kent posted 42 points followed by Caribou at 82, Madawaska at 102, Fort Fairfield at 165, Mattanawcook at 167 and Lee at 275.

    In Wednesday’s cross country meet held in Fort Kent only two girls’ teams fielded enough racers for points. Fort Kent took a 10-27 win over Presque Isle.

    Justine Cyr from Fort Kent took the overall win with a time of 14:31 followed by Jessica Caron at 14:41.

    Presque Isle’s top finisher was Julia Brown in seventh at 18:21. She was followed by Amanda Underwood in eighth at 18:35; Molly Hamel in ninth at 18:45; Kelsey Parks in 14th at 21:05; Erika McKay in 15th at 21:19; Amber Griffin in 16th at 21:23; Hallie Bartlett in 17th at 21:27; and Jenn Steeves in 20th at 25:00.

    Caribou’s finishers included Lindsey Cote in fourth at 17:17; Kristina Stephens in 10th at 19:04; and Karcynn Dorsey in 18th at 21:51.

    Central Aroostook finishers included Nicole McQuade in sixth at 18:09 and Amanda Sam in 21st at 50:12.

    Fort Fairfield’s only finisher was Shannon Towle in 19th at 21:57.

    On the boys’ side, Caribou pulled out a 33-34 win over Madawaska with Fort Kent close behind at 38. Fort Fairfield came in fourth with 69 points followed by Presque Isle at 81 and Central Aroostook at 96.

    Fort Kent’s Nick Michaud won with a time of 12:10 followed by Presque Isle’s Corey Park at 12:47.

    Caribou’s top finisher was Caleb Swanberg in fourth at 13:27. He was followed by Phil Willey in eighth at 13:55; Josh Tardif in 10th at 14:20; Stephen Ciszewski in 11th at 14:39; Devon Stetson in 23rd at 16:27; Jared Sleeper in 24th at 16:40; Finn Bondeson in 25th at 16:43; Jesse Stephens in 26th at 16:44; Luke Finnemore in 27th at 16:54; Spencer McElwain in 28th at 17:00; Jordan Powers in 31st at 17:44; Taylor Jepson in 32nd at 17:44; and Ethan Anderson in 34th at 17:57.

    Fort Fairfield was led by Brendan McLaughlin in seventh at 13:52 followed by Mitchell McLaughlin in 12th at 14:50; Noah Rush-Mabry in 20th at 16:05; Ian Towle in 33rd at 17:50; Patrick Kinsey in 39th at 19:07; and Shane McGillan in 43rd at 25:15.

    Other Presque Isle finishers included Thomas Barnes in 22nd at 16:15; Andrew Duplessis in 29th at 17:26; Nick Shaw in 30th at 17:27; Adam Curtis in 25th at 18:02; Kurtis Perkins in 36th at 18:21; Adam Chandler in 38th at 18:55; and Sam Porter in 40th at 20:27.

    Central Aroostook finishers included Ethan Garrison in 13th at 14:50; Matt Graves in 14th at 15:05; Greg Cousins in 37th at 18:49; Jordon Robinson in 41st at 23:00; Kyle Klein in 42nd at 25:07; and Ethan Styles in 44th at 29:49.
