Presque Isle

Grades 5 and 6 boys’ basketball
The Celtics outscored the Pistons 15-4 in the fourth quarter on their way to the 37-26 victory. Josh Gordon poured in a season high 18 points to lead the Celtics. Khyver Lowe added nine points, all in the second half. Drew Bates finished with eight points, and Liam Hughes rounded out the scoring with two points. Brandon LeBlanc led the Pistons with 14 points.     Karson Eaton chipped in with six points, Joel Tewksbury contributed four points, and Dakota Dinatale added two points.

    The Spurs pulled out the 16-10 win in a defensive battle over the Pistons. Cody Lyford paced the Spurs with a game high six points. Jonathan Rochester added four points, and the trio of Bradley Shields, Karson Wilcox, and Michael Guerrette scored two points each. The Pistons were led by four points from Hale Cushman. Dakota Dinatale and Garrett     Kidney finished with two points apiece, and Joel Tewksbury and Karson Eaton both scored one point.

Grades 5 and 6 girls’ basketball
Carly Bell scored a game high 14 points to help the Mercury to the 26-22 win over the Stars. Amanda Charette and Lora Ireland each contributed four points. Darcie Dow and Paige Gagnon rounded out the scoring with two points each. Kelsie Spooner led the way for the Stars with eight points. Sara Gilson and Kristina Lord both chipped in with six points, and Elena Ford added two points.
The Stars held off a late Liberty rally to pick up the 23-19 victory. Sara Gilson scored a game high 12 points to pace the Stars. Kelsie Spooner added seven points, and Elena Ford and Jacqueline Lambert each finished with two points. Kaleigh Kinney led the way for the Liberty with 11 points. Hannah Guerrette added six points and Courtney Carney rounded out the scoring with two points.

Hotshot Competition
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will host the MRPA Hotshot basketball competition at the William V. Haskell Community Center.
The MRPA Hotshot Competition involves shooting from five “Hot Spots” marked on one half of a basketball court. The competition tests each contestant’s speed, shooting, dribbling and rebounding abilities.
The last day to shoot is Wednesday, Jan. 24, from 5:30-7 p.m. for all ages. Age is determined as of March 31.
Participants may shoot on any or all days, with players’ highest score to be recorded. The top three in each division advance to the regional competition, to be held in Caribou on Feb. 22.

Father/Daughter Dance
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department’s annual Father/Daughter Dance is scheduled for Feb. 9 from 7-9 p.m. at the William V. Haskell Community Center.
The event is open to girls in grades K-6 and their fathers.
Advance tickets go on sale beginning today. The cost is $6 per couple.

Grades 1-2 Little Wildcat basketball
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will begin registration for the Little Wildcat basketball program on Monday, Jan. 29 for Presque Isle residents at the William V. Haskell Community Center. Non-residents may register beginning Feb. 1.
The program is offered to boys and girls in first and second grades and will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays after school at the community center.
The registration fee is $15. The program begins the week of Feb. 26.

Big Rock Ski Passes
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has discounted lift tickets for Big Rock Ski Area in Mars Hill. Junior (ages 6 to 17) lift tickets will be sold for $14, or 22-percent off the regular price, while adult lift tickets will be sold for $19, or 24-percent off the regular price. Kids Ski Club
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is now taking registration for the Kids Ski Club. This is a learn to cross country ski program for children in grades 1-8. This program is designed to teach kids the fun of cross country skiing through games, play, and the use of a terrain park. Parents are encouraged to participate.
The program runs from Jan. 20-March17, Wednesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 10 a.m.-noon The cost for the program is $15. Youth Open Gym
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has started its open gym hours on Sundays and Saturdays throughout the winter from 1-5 p.m. Grades 1-5 are welcome from 1-3, and junior high and high school students are welcome from 3-5. Available activities include gym games, board games, ping pong, foosball, and pool. There is no cost.

Middle School Only Open Gym
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will offer a middle school only open gym time on Friday evenings from 6:30-9 p.m. Students in grades 6-8 are invited to come and participate in open gym and other activities. Possible group activities, such as tubing and bowling, may be scheduled for future dates. This is open to SAD 1 students only.

Adult evening activities
Due to lack of participation, Sunday night dodgeball and Monday night volleyball have been canceled for the year. The current schedule is as follows: Tuesday-men’s basketball; Wednesday-dodgeball; Thursday-men’s basketball. All programs run from 7-9 p.m., and there is a $1 fee per activity per night.

Fort Fairfield

    Hotshot basketball
The Fort Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department will be holding the local Hotshot basketball competition again this year.  Hotshot basketball is for boys and girls ages 9-18, age determined as of March 31, 2007. Boys compete separate from girls. Age groupings are 9-10 year olds, 11-12 year olds, 13-15 year olds, and 16-18 year olds.
Hotshot basketball is skills competition that involves shooting from five “hot spots” marked on the basketball court.  The competition tests speed, shooting, dribbling and rebounding ability. All age group winners of the local Hotshot competition will advance to the northern regional competition to be held in Caribou on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m.  The     Fort Fairfield Recreation Department will hold two practice sessions for interested participants; Friday, Feb. 2 and Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 3-4 p.m. at the community center.
The actual local Hotshot competition will be held on two different days.  Participants can shoot on one of these days or both days and take the best total score of the two days.  The first competition day is Monday, Feb. 12 from 4:30-6 p.m. and the second day is Tuesday, Feb. 13 from 3-4:30 p.m. Both competitions will be held at the community center.  Local winners advance to the northern regional in Caribou and regional winners will then advance to the state competition (date and location TBA).
