PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The Aroostook Medical Center, in celebration of the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day, will be hosting special events at the Aroostook Centre Mall on Friday, Feb. 2.
“Models wearing clothing from the mall stores will be showing off the latest fashions and handing out store coupons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Health screenings, door prizes and health information resources will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” said Andy Saucier, of TAMC’s Public Relations Office.
Saucier said one of every 2.6 female deaths in the United States is due to cardiovascular disease, but by raising awareness, you can help change this statistic.
“Help support the fight against heart disease by putting on your favorite red clothes and joining us this Friday at the mall,” said Saucier.
Mall Manager Patti Crooks is looking forward to Friday’s activities.
“It will be a festive way to show support for a very serious issue. We’re looking forward to a good turnout. This is a great opportunity to pick up free health information and have fun at the same time,” said Crooks.
Recognition of National Wear Red Day isn’t limited to the mall. Downtown businesses have been asked to participate by the Downtown Revitalization Committee. At least one business will be offering specials to mark the occasion.
Carol Bell, at the Jan. 18 DRC meeting, explained the purpose and theme for this year’s Go Red Day. While most activities were planned for the mall, Bell indicated it would be nice to incorporate the downtown into this year’s project. Cathy Beaulieu, owner of Wilder’s Jewelry Store, and Billie Brodsky, co-owner of The Silver Basket, agreed to co-chair this project for the downtown area.
Wilder’s will be offering special prices on all red merchandise and will have refreshments on hand, including heart-healthy dark chocolate.
Wear Red Day is made possible by TAMC, the mall, downtown businesses and Partnership for a Healthy Community. For more information, visit www.goredforwomen.org.
