February is Library Lovers’ Month at the Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library. Library Lovers’ Month is a month-long celebration of public, school and private libraries of all types. This is a time for everyone to recognize the important role libraries play in the cultural and economic success of local communities and the nation as a whole. Whether they depend on the library for best-selling books, children’s story times or access to computers and the Internet, community members are encouraged to show how much they love their local public library this month.
The library is celebrating Library Lovers’ Month by sponsoring a library cartoon contest. Draw a library-related humorous cartoon and submit it to the library. We will publish it in the Star-Herald, our newsletter and on our Web site. There is a chance for first-, second- and third-place prizes.
Every weekend in February, the library will occupy a space at the Aroostook Centre Mall. Activities planned are movie matinees, life-size Curious George, story times, concerts, balloons, crafts and a chance to win our new T-shirt. Rotary, Kiwanis and Staples are among the donors to help this event take place. Please join us Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. during February. Caribou Public Library, in cooperation with the Abel J. Morneault Library in Van Buren is hosting the second weekend and will have the magician the Amazing Lou and other activities.
The magic show is being sponsored by the Van Buren Public Library, Frost Memorial Library, Fort Fairfield Public Library, Washburn Memorial Library, Cary Library in Houlton, and the Caribou Public Library. There is no fee for this program.
Here are some additional ideas for how community members can love their library:
Contribute
Consider a tax-deductible gift to your public library. The Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library has memorial programs, endowments and other opportunities to support quality library services.
Volunteer
Volunteer your time. Opportunities might include delivering reading materials to shut-ins, helping kids with homework after school or being a ‘grandparent’ reader to preschool children.
Promote your library
You don’t have to be a public relations expert to promote your library. You just have to talk about your library.
For more information about Library Lovers’ Month or about other ways to support your public library, contact the library by calling 764-2571 or visiting www.presqueisle.lib.me.us. Or contact Katherine Corey at the Washburn Memorial Library. The number is 455-4814.
