Special to the Star-Herald
The Central Aroostook Humane Society is now feline leukemia testing all cats and providing rabies shots for all cats and dogs, as well as our regular regiment of vaccinations. We are also actively spaying and neutering all animals before they leave our shelter. That being said, we are also raising our prices to cover expenses, but only by $10 per animal ($60 for an altered cat and $70 for an altered dog). We hope you can appreciate our efforts in providing you, the adopting public, the healthiest animal possible. Unfortunately, it all costs money. We are now also asking for your generosity to help us keep up our high standards.
Kitten season is almost upon us. Two intact cats can create 67 cats in just two years. In nine years, two cats and their kittens can create 11,606,707 cats. Likewise, dogs can produce 128 pups in two years and 67,000 in six years (Louisiana SPCA). I can’t think of any better reason to spay and neuter your pets. Males-Neutered cats and dogs focus their attention on their human families, whereas unsterilized, unsupervised males roam in search of a mate, risking injury in traffic and in fights with other males. They mark territory by spraying strong-smelling urine on surfaces (aspca.org).
Having your pets spayed and neutered is a win-win situation for both you and your pet. It is also good for the community. If you are looking for a friend for life, please visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society on-line at www.centralaroostookhumanesociety.org or visit us in person at 26 Cross St. in Presque Isle.
