PRESQUE ISLE – Bessie Sutherland Corey went to be with her Lord on February 22, 2007. Bessie was born April 6, 1917 in Portage, Maine to Lloyd and Vera Sutherland.
She was the oldest of nine children and was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth, three brothers – Wayne, Bob and Jack, and a sister – Joyce Sutherland Bragdon.
After graduating from Houlton High School, Bessie attended Normal School, which is now the UMPI campus in Presque Isle. She married Kenneth George Corey of Presque Isle on November 9, 1937 at the parsonage of the United Baptist Church, which is now State Street Baptist Church. Shortly after her marriage, Bessie accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and faithfully served Him at the church in Presque Isle and, after moving to the coast of Maine in 1955, at the First Baptist Church of Rockland. Her many friends from the two churches remember her hospitable spirit and willingness to teach, cook, or serve in any capacity needed. Ken and Bessie returned to Presque Isle in 1989.
Bessie is survived by three sisters – Jean Sutherland St. Pierre of Ashland, Sandra Sutherland Porter of Ashland, and Gail Sutherland of Presque Isle, one brother – Lloyd White Sutherland, Jr. of Herndon, Virginia, three children – Peter and Martha Corey of Bangor, Tim and Barbara Corey of Dunbar, Wisconsin, and Lucinda Corey Boyd of Manchester, New Hampshire, five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Bessie Corey is now with her husband who preceded her in death 14 years ago, and is at rest and peace in the presence of her Lord, to worship and serve Him for all eternity.
