Winterfest 2007
Winterfest 2007 began with the Rotary Supper on Friday night. It was delicious with a menu of home-baked beans, hotdogs, potato salad and brown rolls, followed by brownies and ice cream.
The supper was followed by a Talent Show. Fireman Fred Parsons began the evening by singing “American Soldier” as a tribute to David Stitham, one of our local heroes who has served in Iraq.
The youngest contestants included Noel Bailey singing “Born to Fly,” Abagail Shaw singing “Gift of My Heart,” Hannah Miller singing “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” Jillian Tweedie singing “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” Breann Clayton singing “It’s Hard to Believe” and Whitney Bradbury singing “The Start of Something New.” The winner of this category was Abagail Shaw.
The Teen category contestants were the band Stand Out playing “Closing Time” with members Brian Michaels, Manny Martinez and Logan McLaughlin; as well as Aryn Bernier singing “Closer Walk With Thee.” Aryn was named the winner in this category.
The Adult contestants were: Jan Bonkowski Votaw playing guitar and singing “Working on My Next Broken Heart,” Kathy Collins singing “Angels in Waiting,” Bob Collins singing “What a Wonderful World,” Jared Carney singing “Hero,” Dawn Eckstein singing “There Will Come a Day,” Randolph Michaud singing “The Grand Tour” and Stan Harris playing “Amazing Grace” on the piano. The winner of this category was Stan Harris.
Special selections were performed by Julie Shaw – “Adonai” and “My Redeemer” and Fred Parsons – “Have You Forgotten?”
Central Aroostook High School was a very busy place on Saturday morning. The day started off with the St. Patrick’s Day breakfast sponsored by the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Club. Bacon, eggs and more were served to all who attended.
The Cribbage Tournament had 36 players with Christine Ricker the overall winner with a score of 723. In second place was Clarence Rossignol, while third place went to Jason Theriault. Prize money was awarded to these top three winners.
The Methodist Women held a bake sale in the CAHS lobby and had tables full of breads and sweets to sell as a fund-raiser. Other happenings were face painting, Papi the Shrine Klown, a coin search, horse-drawn wagon rides, snowmobile rides, pee wee basketball and BINGO.
The afternoon and evening continued with events at Big Rock. The Kardboard Klassic included three categories. First place in the Youth category was Emory Davis on “DefCon 1,“ First in the Junior Division was the team of Jeremy Tweedie, Tyler “Buzz” Rusby and Logan Brewer on “Git-R-Done.” The Adult Division winner was the team of Jake Delano, Josh Buck and Taylor McLaughlin on the “Twinkie Mobile.”
Other mountain events were a Chicken Stew Dinner, a Big Air Contest and Torchlight Parade and Fireworks. The evening ended with an Adult Dance featuring the band Too Far North.
The Winterfest Committee would like to thank everyone that helped make this year’s events such a big success. It could not happen without many helping hands.
Kindgergarten registration
Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten registration will be held in SAD 42, Mars Hill and Blaine, on Monday, April 9.
Pre-kindergarten students must be four years of age on or before October 15, 2007. Students who will be five years of age on or before October 15, 2007 are eligible for kindergarten. Please contact Fort Street School (429-8514 or 429-8515) to schedule an appointment to register your child.
The state of Maine requires: (1) proof of immunizations, and (2) birth certificate (hospital copies are not acceptable). A copy must be obtained from the municipal office of the town or city where you were living when the child was born. SAD 42 requires these documents at the time of registration.
If you are not a legal parent, a copy of guardianship papers (Probate Court) must be completed before registration.
Those students currently enrolled in the Pre-kindergarten program do not need to be registered for the kindergarten program.

Students of the Month
In a continuing effort to recognize outstanding student citizenship, the faculty of Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School announces that Rachael Grew, Jenny Crawford and Ryan Kilcollins have been selected as the March Students of the Month. They were selected in recognition of their commitment to the pillar of character, specifically the pillar for the 2006-2007 school year, citizenship.
Rachael is a member of the seventh grade class and lists English and science as her favorite subjects. She is a member of the junior high soccer, basketball and softball teams. Rachael enjoys playing basketball and hanging out with her friends. In the future, she plans to attend college and major in pharmacy. Rachael is the daughter of Tracie and Glen Grew.
Jenny Crawford is a member of the senior class and lists art and English as her favorite subjects. She is the senior class public relations officer, a mentor at CAHS and a member of the volleyball team. Jenny enjoys cooking, hanging out with friends, laughing, going on road trips, shopping, writing, painting and four-wheeling. Jenny plans on attending the University of Maine at Presque Isle or Husson College to study criminal justice so she can become a police officer for Aroostook County. She is the granddaughter of Roger and Linda Crawford.
Ryan is a member of the junior class and lists English, U.S. history and anatomy as his favorite subjects. He is a member of the soccer and basketball teams, varsity club and is a teacher’s aide and mentor at CAHS. Ryan enjoys playing sports and hanging out with his friends. In the future, Ryan plans to go to college to major in pharmacy. He is the son of Mike and Kelly Kilcollins.
Bridgewater Community Club
The Bridgewater Community Club will meet on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. at the home of Edwina Whited, 427 Boundary Line Road, Bridgewater.
The Community Club has been organized to promote friendship among women of all ages and to undertake projects that improve the community. Membership dues are one dollar per month, and all interested women are invited to attend.

Cookies for sale
Girl Scout Troop 636 will be having a cookie sale on Saturday, March 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mars Hill IGA. Cookies are $3.50 per box. All the varieties will be available including a new flavor for this year – Little Brownie cookie, a sugar-free treat.
You can buy cookies for yourself or as gifts. The troop is also asking for help in their community service project in which they plan to donate a number of boxes to the Community Cupboard food pantry.

Senior Citizens
The Mars Hill, Blaine and Westfield Senior Citizens met March 7 at the Mars Hill Snowmobile Club. There were 19 members and two guests present – Don and Florence Kinney. Gwen McEntee read some poetry before lunch.
Don Cadrette asked the blessing and gave the invocation. The flag salute was followed by the singing of “God Bless America.” Thank-you cards were read from the families of Doreen Townsend and Paul Savard; from CAHS for the Christmas gifts and from the Mars Hill area Community Cupboard.
Following the meeting, members played BINGO.
The next meeting will be held on March 21 and will be an oyster stew. Jim and Arlene Wiggins will provide the stew, other members will provide sweets and crackers. There will be no door prizes this year and no outing is planned for March.

Golden Age Club
The Golden Age Club met on March 13 at the Civic Center in Bridgewater. There were seven members present: Rosalie and Bob Craig, Liz and Don Cadrette, Florence and Don Kinney and Arlene Wiggins.
Don asked the blessing and gave the invocation. All participated in the flag salute. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted.
Club members planned the menu for the upcoming Northern Maine Council on Aging meeting they are hosting on March 19 at 10 a.m.

Senior citizens’ meals
The Central Aroostook High School cafeteria will be a meal site for area Senior Citizens on Tuesdays. Senior citizens will be served at 12 noon each Tuesday that school is in session. The cost of the meal will be $3.25, payable at the meal site.

Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center in Mars Hill. The club held a business meeting and discussed the upcoming Miss Greater Mars Hill and Little Miss Mars Hill pageants. Due to the number of contestants in this year’s contest, the tea and pageant will be held together on Saturday afternoon. The planned date is Saturday, March 31.
The club is also planning a 50th anniversary celebration in May. The club was founded in 1957.
