April

April showers aren’t bringing any May flowers – at least not until the snow disappears, thanks to the latest round of storms that have hit the area in the last week, including Monday’s mixed bag of precipitation.
Monday’s was just the latest in a continued pattern of mild temperatures followed by unexpected – and unwelcomed – snowfall around the Aroostook County area and the state. But while Monday’s nor’easter brought with it rain and flooding conditions to much of the state, northern Aroostook County saw more in the way of snowfall, turning later in the day to slush as temperatures rose and snow turned to sleet and rain.
Power outages didn’t appear to be a problem for county residents, although intermittent power surges were reported and reportedly affected businesses trying to use their e-mail on Monday.
“We had reports from individuals that they were having trouble sending e-mails or receiving the same from City Hall,” said Presque Isle City Manager Tom Stevens. “We believe the problem involved power surges caused by the weather.”
Recent storms caused snow to build up on tree limbs and power lines, with reports of downed lines in some areas. Power was not disrupted for any length of time and crews had repairs promptly.
Police responded to only a few accidents throughout the day, as drivers found themselves fighting slushy road conditions. Route 10 and the Houlton Road once again proved two of the more treacherous paths to travel. A vehicle was reported off the road along Route 10 earlier in the day, with no injuries reported. Accidents later in the day proved a bit more of a problem and included injuries.
Two accidents were reported on the Houlton Road shortly after 4 p.m. on April 16. The first was near the weigh station area north of Perry’s Mini Mart. Details weren’t available on that accident but no serious injuries were reported. Road conditions were believed to be the cause of that accident.
A second accident was reported to the Maine State Police around 4:05 p.m. between Westfield and Mars Hill.
“We received a report of a two-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Westfield. The collision occurred just north of the Mars Hill town line on Buckley Hill,” said Sgt. David McPherson, of the Maine State Police.
According to McPherson, investigation disclosed that a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 26-year-old Kathryn Izzo, of Houlton, was traveling south when she lost control and crossed over into the northbound travel lane.
“Izzo collided with a 1999 GMC pickup driven by 23-year-old Micah Desmond, of Easton.
Izzo was transported to TAMC by Crown Ambulance where she was treated for several injuries, including facial fractures. McPherson said Desmond was not seriously injured in the accident. Both occupants were reportedly wearing seatbelts and no charges are pending. Both vehicles were considered total losses.
“Traffic along Route 1 was stopped intermittently for approximately an hour and a half,” said McPherson.
Road conditions were believed to be the cause of that accident.
Trooper Chuck Michaud served as the primary investigator at the scene.
Although the calendar may say it’s spring, police advise drivers to use caution when driving, especially when precipitation varies from snow to sleet and rain.
