This Saturday, April 21, is Story Time with the Animals at the Central Aroostook Humane Society, so bring the kids for a story, snack and a visit with our animals at 10 a.m. at the shelter (26 Cross St., Presque Isle). We will also be at the Kiwanis Home, Garden and Recreation Show at the Forum this weekend. We will have educational material for pet owners, items to purchase, door prizes and kittens! We are very thankful that the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club is so supportive of our cause. Have you ever considered adopting a hound? There are certain characteristics of the hound breed that I find very desirable, but they aren’t for everyone. There are two different types of hounds: scent hounds and sight hounds. Some examples of scent hounds are: Basset Hound, Beagle, Coon Hounds, Blood Hounds, Norwegian Elk Hound, Harrier and Otter Hound. Examples of sight hounds are: Afghan Hound, Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, Whippet and Rhodesian Ridgeback. As you have probably figured out, scent hounds search with their noses and sight hounds with their eyes.
At the Central Aroostook Humane Society, we mostly see scent hounds. These dogs usually have long ears and booming voices. Scent hounds are not built for speed like sight hounds, because they do not need to keep their prey in sight, but they are built for endurance. All hounds need regular exercise and some need a great deal of space. Scent hounds (especially Bassets) can be slaves to their noses: given an opening, they are apt to stray far from home.
Hounds, as a rule, are intelligent and easygoing dogs. The most important thing to remember about all hounds is that their hunting instinct will always be more important to them than you. Hounds have a wanderlust . . . or a huntlust . . . and they will take off to go and hunt down things they deem interesting.(Homewoods Rescue)
Hounds are generally hearty, healthy dogs and very much comedians. I have found that my own hounds, Tucker (scent hound) and Zoe (sight hound) keep me guessing and always laughing. They are very different, although look similar. I personally love the hound breed.
We currently have four hounds at the Central Aroostook Humane Society looking for homes. These dogs have been pets, but as with any dog adopted from a shelter, you need to give them an adjustment period and this transition may be stressful to the dog. Give them a chance, be sensitive to their needs (they may not know how to tell you they need to go outside or which door leads to the outside). Be patient, be kind, be consistent and you will have a treasured friend for life.
Visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society and fall in love. We have many wonderful dogs and cats available for adoption. We are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or give us a call at 764-3441. Don’t forget about our pets on line at www.centralaroostookhumanesociety.org.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
