PIHS students attend annual State FCCLA Convention

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Presque Isle High School students recently attended the State FCCLA Convention held at the Ramada Inn in Bangor.
FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) is a student organization that focuses on community service and the betterment of family. The students who attended were Kristen Campbell-Dyer, Victoria Tanenbaum, Amy L. Michaud, Claire Laduc, Charles Kirk, Maura Delong and Glendon Zernicke.
This year, two students, Tanenbaum and Campbell-Dyer, collected donation items as part of their STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) Event competition at the State FCCLA Conference. Donations of boxes of food, household supplies, dishes, and silk flower arrangements were presented to Dina Casey, assistant director of the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor. The gifts were greatly appreciated and will be put to good use by the families and individuals who stay there.
The students documented their progress with planning and implementing the donation drive and prepared a visual presentation for the judges. They were presented with Silver medals for their efforts and the group received a beautiful thank you note from Casey, as well.
Guest speakers at convention were Donna Gray from “Relay for Life” and Laura Raymond from the University of Maine at Orono. The Convention included a State Theme centered around “Relay for Life,” which is a growing fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society.
Raymond, a volunteer with Relay for Life, spoke about her personal experiences of losing loved ones to cancer, which started her involvement with the project. A presentation from Career Connection was also included as a workshop.
Everyone participated in a beautiful and moving candle luminary ceremony. Students lit their candles in honor of someone they knew who was either a cancer survivor or as a memorial to someone they knew who died from cancer. We all learned that each of us knows at least one person who has had cancer, which is why everyone should be involved in helping to raise funds for research and treatment. The Presque Isle FCCLA Chapter helped raise $200 prior to the convention for the “Relay for Life.” Congratulations to the participating students!
