PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – ATV enthusiasts will have to wait a bit longer to hit the trails this year, due the late departure of snow from the area this year.
“Spring arrived late this year and many area trails are just now losing the white stuff. That will extend the ‘mud season’ a few more weeks,” said Gary Welch, vice president of the Star City ATV Club.
According to Welch, trails normally are scheduled to open around mid-May.
This year, however, the opening date has been pushed back a bit.
“Trails won’t be open this year until the end of May. By postponing their opening, it gives them time to dry properly,” said Welch.
Getting on the trails too early, when they are still muddy, causes damage to the trails as machines create ruts as they stir up the mud. Over time, if use of muddy trails is allowed, those trails become difficult to travel, creating a lot of hard work for clubs to repair. Welch said although the club had planned its first ride shortly after the original opening date for trails, club officials opted to postpone the ride and move the opening date to ensure trails have time to dry.
“We’ve spent a lot of time recently posting the trails, putting up new signs. By delaying the opening date, the trails will be in better shape for all to enjoy the rest of the season,” said Welch.
