TURNER, Lionel E., 85, of Mapleton died Sunday, July 1, 2007. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 5, 2007 at State St. Baptist Church in Presque Isle. Military committal services will follow at the Southside Cemetery in Mapleton. Arrangements are in the care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle.
Mapleton- Lionel E. “Li” Turner, 85, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather died unexpectedly at a local hospital on July 1, 2007. His family was by his side. Born on February 3, 1922, he was the son of Guy E. and M. Rose (Deveau) Turner. He attended Presque Isle schools.
Lionel served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force during WW II. He married the love of his life, Shirley M. Hapworth on November 7, 1944 and settled in Mapleton to raise a family. He attended East Mapleton Advent Christian Church for many years. He worked at International Harvester/MPG for many years until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Biggest Bucks in Maine Club. Lionel was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors and spent much of his life hunting and fishing. He would spend countless hours fishing and hunting only to bring back his “catch” of the day along with many stories of “the one that got away.” He shared his love of fishing and hunting with his son, Leonard and also with sons-in-law and his grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and also with his most trusted and loyal companion, his Boston Terrier, “Bunny”. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley of 52 years in December, 1996, brothers, Clayton, Arnold and Martin and one sister, Kathryn.
He is survived by a son, Leonard E. Turner of Crouseville, six daughters, Ethel B. Gardner of Presque Isle, Charlene R. Allen of Westfield, Linda L. Mazerolle of Caribou, Shirlene J. Allen of Lebanon N.H., Betsy A. Harris of Presque Isle and Wynne E. Freeman of Caribou, 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers, Donald Turner of Ashland, Earlen Turner of Fort Fairfield, and Charles Turner of Connecticut, 4 sisters, Florence Standish of Oklahoma, Eva Condon of Presque Isle, Arlene Essency of Connecticut, Dorothy Holland of Georgia and many special,
special nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 PM Thursday, July 5th at State St. Baptist Church in Presque Isle with his grandson, Stan Harris III and Rev. Randall Burns officiating. Military committal services will follow at the Southside Cemetery in Mapleton.
