NMCC to waive application or registration fee for individuals who attend annual College Info Nigh on August 1     Aroostook County — Northern Maine Community College will host a College Information Night for residents of Aroostook County and neighboring regions of New Brunswick on Wednesday, August 1, between 5 and 7 p.m. (Eastern Time) in the Edmonds Conference Center.
The evening is designed for members of the public who want to learn more about the college and the various certificate and associate degree programs offered on the Presque Isle campus and at distance education centers throughout Aroostook County. College officials will be on hand to discuss opportunities for enrolling as either a full- or part-time students.
In addition to information on programs offered at the college, Info Night attendees will also have the opportunity to discuss financial aid opportunities. NMCC offers the lowest tuition rates in Maine and awards financial aid to 79 percent of its students.
As a further incentive, NMCC will waive the standard application for admission fee of $20 for the 2007-2008 academic year for individuals attending Info Night, for those who apply for a specific program. For part-time students not enrolling in a program but wanting to pick up a class or two, the registration fee will be waived.
“Info night provides a wonderful opportunity for community members to learn what the college has to offer and see for themselves who convenient class offerings can work into most schedules,” said Jason Parent, director of development and college relations. “Over the years, many individuals have found success at NMCC and subsequently in the workforce, because they took the first step and attended Info Night.”
One such individual is Renee Eager of Presque Isle. The wife and mother of two attended the annual evening event on a whim an few years ago and has not looked back since.
“My husband and I were sitting at home one evening and we saw an advertisement for Info Night at NMCC. We talked about it and he encouraged me to attend. The next thing I knew I was an enrolled students,” said Eager. “The process was so incredibly easy. I signed up for classes on the spot and the next day I was visiting with the staff in the financial aid office to see what was available for assistance.”
During her time on campus, Eager would adjust her course schedule according to family and other life demands. For some semesters that meant enrolling only part-time, for others Eager was enrolled as a full-time student.
Through it all, however, she successfully combined family and college commitments and excelled at meeting the demands of both. She was selected as the Senior Achievement Award winner for her program in 2006 and was recognized as one of 13 Community College students named to the 2006 Maine All-Academic Team. Eager also served as the treasurer for the campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students in two-year colleges.
“I am so proud to be an alumna of NMCC. My time at the college really flew by, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Everyone at the college was so helpful and supportive. I would encourage anyone to take that first step by attending Info Night. It has made all the difference in my life,” said Eager.
Interested individuals are encouraged to attend the information night by simply showing up between 5 and 7 p.m. on August 1. For more information, contact the NMCC Student Services Office at 768-2787.
