Tri-community families mark five anniversaries

Anniversary milestones
The Mars Hill, Blaine and Bridgewater area have been teeming with couples celebrating anniversary milestones. Congratulations to them all!     James and Arlene Wiggins were married in Bridgewater on June 22, 1957. The children of Harry & Verna Pryor and James & Ruby Wiggins, Jim and Arlene moved to Connecticut for a few years where Jim worked for Pratt & Whitney. They then moved back to Mars Hill with Jim working for the New England Telephone Company. Their wedding attendants were Leona (Pryor) Hess, Betty (Mullen) Dow, Henrietta Estabrook, Anna Mae (Wiggins) Bradford, Dean Wiggins, Alford Shaw, John Bradford and Bobby Blanchard. Flower girls were Peggy Tompkins and Tammy (Wiggins) Glidden and the ring bearer were the sons of Ralph Estabrook: Frank and Neal (young Ralph). They celebrated their 50th anniversary in Blaine on June 23 with many friends and family members attending. Jim and Arlene have four children: Debbie Wiggins of Presque Isle; Wilner and Jennifer, of Memphis, Tenn.; Katie and Clayton Endy, of Mars Hill; and Janice and Walt Mosher, of Blaine; and six grandchildren.
Gerald and Angie Henderson were married at the East Machias Congregational Church on July 6, 1957.
Angeline Clara Ashley graduated from Washington Academy before attending New Brunswick Bible Institute, where she graduated in 1955. Gerald attended Allagash schools before joining the U.S. Army.  They lived in Houlton and St. Francis before settling in Bridgewater. Gerald has a tractor-trailer, which he has driven for many years. Their wedding attendants were Mrs. Stanley Mattatall – sister of the bride, Janice Robinson, Janice Guptill, Rev. George Henderson – brother of the groom, Deter Ashley – brother of the bride, and Ralph Bates. The flower girl was Eugenia Ashley – niece of the bride. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on July 7 in Bridgewater with many friends and family. They have two children, John of Bridgewater, and Jane Jarvis of Belle Isle, N.B., and two grandchildren.
Harley and Loree York were married on December 28, 1956, at the Easton Pentecostal Church. Harley Wayman York and Loree (Smith) York lived in El Paso, Texas and Virginia while in the service, before returning to live in Mars Hill. Harley is a certified public accountant and was a partner at Chester M. Kearney before his retirement. Their wedding attendants were Patty (Graham) Shaw, Muriel (Graham) Fletcher, Marjorie (Ames) Neely, Donald Beattie, John Gilman and Lester Laing. They enjoyed their 50th anniversary celebration with friends and family on July 8 at the home of Brent and Kay. They have four children: Hal and Karen of Bellville, Ontario; Brent and Kay of Mars Hill; Marjorie and Terry Mortimer of Abbington, Md.; and Linda and Matt Thomas of Mars Hill; and 14 grandchildren.
Ken and Judy Lunn were married July 9, 1957 in Mars Hill. The children of Gerald and Dorothy Grass and Kilburn and Irene Lunn, they have lived in Mars Hill since their wedding. Ken worked as a plumber/pipe filler at jobs around the state. Their attendants were Marilyn Lunn and Ronnie Nightingale.  They have five children: Sharon Parker of Bow, N.H., Terry & Sue Lunn of Sugar Hill, Ga.; Brian & Lois Lunn of Sebattus; Nancy & Scott Clockedile of Mars Hill; and Heidi & Joe Levesque of Mars Hill; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. They enjoyed a gathering of friends and family on July 9 at Fort Street School.
Burton and Launa Durost were married in an outdoor ceremony on July 15, 1947 at the Vaughn Bubar homestead. Their parents were Vaughn & Madeline Bubar and Everett & Lillian Durost. Donald Bickford performed the ceremony. Their attendants were: Irene Boyd, Ida Lunn, Lois (McPherson) Terrell, Wendell Harrington, Paul Durost and Phil Bubar. The flower girls were Janice Lee Boyd and Diane McCrum. Following their wedding trip, the couple settled in Bridgewater and farmed. They have two daughters, Trudy and Steve Clockedile of Blaine and Sherri & Warren Cushman of Mars Hill, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. They enjoyed a get-together at East Ridge Union Church on Sunday, July 15, with friends and family.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center in Mars Hill. There were 20 members and one guest present.
The guest speaker was Carolyn Dorsey, director of continuing education for Husson College in Presque Isle. The Presque Isle campus is now located at Northern Maine Community College. Husson’s programs run in the evenings and on some weekends. The students attending the outreach campuses receive the same degree as those that attend the main campus.
Husson began in 1898 as the Shaw School of Business – a self-based learning program. Participants typically attended school until they found a full-time job. The Aroostook County outreach campus opened over 30 years ago at Loring, before moving to Caribou and now to Presque Isle.
The five programs currently being offered are: business, health and science, humanities and education, with pharmacy being added this year and law coming soon. There are five graduate courses being offered: business, nursing, criminal justice administration, educational counseling and clinical counseling.
The classes run for four- to 11-week terms each year, with 15 courses usually available each term. There are currently 150  students in the programs – 30 doing graduate work and 120 doing undergraduate studies.
Storybook Stew
The Walter T. A. Hansen Memorial Library will host “Storybook Stew” on selected Wednesday nights from 7-8 p.m. Children age 4-8 are invited to join Miss Chris from the Cooperative Extension on July 25 and August 1. Mark this on your calendar for an evening of reading, games, snacks and fun!
Bridgewater Historical Association

Ladies Stitch and *itch Group
The Bridgewater Recreation Department has formed a Ladies’ Stitch and & *itch group. The group meets every other Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgewater Civic Building. Ladies of all ages are invited to attend. There is no charge to attend.
This is an opportunity to bring whatever you are working on: cross-stitch, embroidery, scrapbooking, sewing, etc., and share good conversation while working on your favorite project. If you do not have anything to bring, that’s OK too, as others will be willing share and teach.
All are welcome – you don’t have to be a Bridgewater resident to participate, so bring your friends, too!
