I think that sometimes we need to stop and count our blessings. The Central Aroostook Humane Society has been fortunate, we have some wonderful supporters who are there to help, especially in times of need. We are also very fortunate to have caring volunteers, not only cleaning, etc., at the shelter but also serving as board members. Another blessing is our ability to do positive things in the way of helping the animals in need in our area; not only do we take strays and give them a safe place with food, water and medical attention, we help people re-home their pets when they can no longer care for them. We are proud of who we are and what we do but also why we do it. We help these animals because we can, not for any other reason. We are dedicated to making the lives of animals in our area better, to help the helpless. Each one of us has had an animal come to the shelter who is special, one that has caught our heart and will stay there forever. Our employees work very hard to ensure that the animals in our care get the very best and you can help too. Volunteering your time is very rewarding; you will be paid back 10-fold by the love you receive from the animals at our little shelter.

One quote that helps me keep things in perspective is the following: “I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter . . . the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry. ‘God, I said, this is terrible! I think we all have a calling, I spoke to a lady in Ashland the other day. We had a lovely visit and she showed me the dolls that she and her husband make. I was amazed and told her that I can’t do things like that, I am basically handicapped when it comes to being creative or sewing, but she said, ‘I do the dolls and your calling is to care for the animals. I couldn’t do what you do; we all have our place.’ I guess that is true, the animals are my calling and I feel very rewarded by helping with my work at the shelter and fortunate that I have been given this opportunity to do something so positive. I honestly don’t remember what it was like before I became involved; this is a part of who I am and I love it. I am sure I speak for myself and for my staff and board members.
