Image   Mars Hill- Alice Alma Hitchcock, 90, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2007 with loved ones at her side. She went to be with her beloved husband, Carl, and their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Alice was born in Mars Hill March 12, 1917, the daughter of William and Harriet (Vincent) Graves. She lived most of her life in Mars Hill, the town and people she loved, always close to family and friends.
In the mid 30’s, as a young woman, Alice played basketball with her classmates and won a State level ladies foul shooting contest. The trophy she brought home was a cherished fixture. She worked side by side with her father and brothers in the family grocery store in Mars Hill and this was one place where she developed many cherished friendships.
Her love for children was felt naturally by the young ones and she was in her glory when she worked as a Teacher’s Aid in the Westfield Elementary School. Many students reconnected with her as adults and continued meaningful friendships.
Alice loved reading and studying her Bible and did so as she lived independently to her last days. A Prayer Warrior, she always had a long prayer list, faithfully praying for the needs of others, a support that was and is still felt by many. She had a way with flowers and enjoyed raising, admiring, and sharing beautiful begonias and geraniums.
She dearly loved her family and provided tireless and priceless support to one of her brothers who was ill for some time. She also visited with family and friends who felt uplifted after their time with her.
She is survived by her two sons, David C. Hitchcock of Portland, and grandchildren John Hitchcock, Adam Hitchcock, Stacie Hitchcock, and Carl Hitchcock; and Steven G. Hitchcock and his wife Sharyl (Pierce) Hitchcock and grandchildren Sylvan Erin Thorncraft and Daniel Hitchcock. She was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their children. In addition to her beloved husband, Carl, she was predeceased by an infant son Richard, brothers and sister G. Vincent Graves, Donald Graves, Philip Graves, Marjorie Gray, and Robert Graves.
At her request, graveside services were conducted at 10:00 AM Saturday at King’s Grove Cemetery in Mars Hill with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating. At 2:00 PM Saturday there was a memorial service at the East Ridge Union Church in Mars Hill. Both events were open to all.
Psalm 139:14- I will praise thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.             Arrangements are in the care of the Duncan Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed at www.duncan-graves.com.
