Owl vacancies filled

The University of Maine at Presque Isle recently named three new coaches, all Aroostook County natives, to positions for the upcoming school year.
Tammy Krul of Caribou is the new head coach of the women’s soccer team. Krul brings over 14 years experience coaching and playing college and high school soccer. UMPI is Krul’s first college head coaching position.     “Coach Krul will be a great asset and head coach for the Lady Owls with her connection to the County kids as well as her international ties,” said Athletic Director Rich Ward.
“Not only will she bring the experience that comes from several years coaching but, also bring the excitement and enthusiasm of a rookie coach who has experienced success on a national level,” added Ward, referring to Krul’s two national championships while playing with Franklin Pierce College.
Krul began her soccer career playing at Caribou High School before going to Franklin Pierce in Rindge, N.H. and playing for Mark Krikorian, who now is the head coach at Florida State University.
Since earning her bachelor’s degree in 1997, Tammy and her husband, Robbie, have owned and operated the Dutch Soccer Academy. Last year, DSA enrolled more than 1,500 students and hosted 15 coaches from all parts of the world.
The Owls are also excited to announce the hiring of Mike Michaud, also of Caribou, as the head baseball coach.
He has been involved as a coach since 2001, coaching both soccer and baseball at the high school level.
Michaud is a graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle with a bachelor’s degree and is currently an admission’s counselor at the university.
“I believe Mike’s direction, together with his enthusiasm and energy, is a sure formula for success,” Ward said. “He is very organized and motivated.”
Ward also announced that Tracy Guerrette has been hired as the new head coach of the Lady Owls women’s basketball program.
She takes over a squad that posted a 15-6 regular season record and qualified for the NCAA III Independent Northeast Women’s Tournament last year.
“We are thrilled to have Tracy on board as our new women’s basketball coach,” said Ward. “She is extremely qualified and will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to this program that will help us to maintain our standing among the state.”
Guerrette replaces Ward, the university’s athletic director who served as the interim coach for two years and posted a 32-13 record. UMPI is completing the NCAA Division III membership process this upcoming year.
Guerrette played high school basketball at Wisdom High  School in St. Agatha. She coached girls basketball at her alma mater the past three seasons.
Perhaps most will know Guerrette as a valued member of the University of Maine basketball team a few years ago.         Guerrette, the team captain her final two seasons, enjoyed much success playing for two very skilled head coaches, Joanne Palombo-McCallie (head coach at Duke University) and Sharon Versyp (head coach at Purdue University).
