PRESQUE ISLE – When Dr. Samuel Natale visits the University of Maine at Presque Isle next week to serve as the Storer Boone Memorial Lecturer, he’ll be setting aside time to participate in a student-focused event. The day after Natale hosts a community lecture on medical ethics in the 21st century, he will lead a panel discussion on ethics and academia designed especially for students.
The panel discussion, titled “Ethics and the Academy,” will take place from 10-10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the Library Conference Room. Natale will be joined by three university faculty members: Shirley Rush, professor of social work; Patric Edward, business professor; and Dr. Ray Rice, professor of English. The four will talk about ethics in their disciplines and take part in a question and answer session.
“I think ethics runs through all the disciplines,” Virginia Fischer, who is organizing the event, said. “Since Dr. Natale is talking about medical ethics, we thought we would host this discussion to expand on that and relate it more to the university community.”
Natale is a professor of strategic management at Adelphi University’s School of Management in Garden City, N.Y. He received his doctorate in education/psychology from the University of Oxford in England. He earned a master of divinity degree from the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., as well as a master’s degree in humanities from the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his bachelor’s degree in humanities from La Salle College in Philadelphia, Penn.
Natale will spend two days on the university campus. On Oct. 1, he will deliver his lecture “Hippocrates to HIPPA, Medical Ethics in the 21st Century,” at 6:30 p.m. in Wieden Auditorium. The Storer W. Boone, M.D., Memorial Lecture is sponsored by The Aroostook Medical Center in partnership with the University’s Distinguished Lecturer Series.
Both the community lecture and the panel discussion are open to the campus community and the public. For more information about the lecture, call 768-4172. For information about the panel, call 768-9602.
