Memorial scholarships
AUGUSTA – Governor John E. Baldacci congratulated five students from around Maine for being awarded with State Police Memorial Scholarships. The Governor presented the students with their checks recently in the Governor’s Office.
“This is the 24th year of the scholarship program,” Baldacci said. “I have really appreciated my association with the Maine State Police. They couldn’t be a finer organization of individuals and family members. I am very proud of what they do for us. It is with honor I am able to present these scholarships.”
Receiving the scholarships were Lindsay Cejka of Brunswick, who will attend Smith College in Northampton, Mass.; Kelsie Winklmann of Fairfield, who will attend Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H.; Amy Marchessault of North Waterboro, who will attend the University of Maine at Orono; Jamie Pelletier of Eagle Lake, who will attend the University of Maine at Orono; and Lindsay Trafton of Unity, who will attend the University of Maine at Farmington. Amy Heino of Belgrade will also receive a scholarship but was unable to attend the ceremony in the Governor’s Office. Amy will attend the University of Rhode Island.
The scholarships were awarded to students of an active, retired or deceased state trooper who are going into their first year of college.
Fort Fairfield Middle High School Class of ’54 awards $4,000 scholarship
ELLSWORTH—Heather Hathaway, daughter of Roy and Maxine Hathaway, received a $4,000 scholarship from the Class of ’54. She plans to pursue her studies at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.
Heather had the honor of being class valedictorian and she also received the Maine Principals Association award. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was an honor roll student at Fort Fairfield High School. Her activities included basketball, track and field, and band.
“We are thrilled to be able to help energetic, bright students like Heather pursue their dreams,” said Norm Stevenson, chair of the Class of ’54 Scholarship Committee.
This is the fourth scholarship grant awarded by the Class of ’54. At its reunion in 1999, the FFHS Class of 1954 voted to commemorate its 50th reunion by establishing a scholarship fund for the high school. Stevenson is pleased to announce that the Class of ’54 Scholarship is sufficiently funded to support a continuing annual minimum $4,000 award.
He noted, “We are pleased and proud to have created a legacy of significant educational support more than a half century after leaving FFHS. Our fund’s balance is in excess of $110,000 as a result of the generosity of 67 percent of our class and the impressive financial results achieved by Maine Community Foundation.”
“The High School Scholarship Committee and guidance staff have done a great job representing our selection criteria. We are as impressed with Heather as we have been with the previous three recipients,” added Stevenson.
Contributions to the Class of ’54 Scholarship are always welcome.
These offset the impact of inflation to ensure its continuity 50 years from now. The Class of ’54 Scholarship Committee welcomes inquiries about the fund. The Committee members are: Roger Bernard, Charles Bruce, Judy DeMerchant Cohen, Ellen Cassidy Corrow, Phil DeMerchant, Pete Huntress, Norm Stevenson and Judy Smith Young.
