PRESQUE ISLE – Michael MacPherson of Presque Isle has been appointed by the board of directors of the United Way of Aroostook to serve as chairman for the 2007-08 United Way Fund-raising Campaign.     MacPherson is well known throughout Aroostook County because of his involvement with numerous organizations and the positive impact he has had on those organizations. The United Way board has set this year’s campaign goal at $475,000.
“I am honored that the board of directors of United Way asked me to chair their annual fund drive. It’s a good feeling to be affiliated with an organization where 99.6 percent of the money raised stays in the county,” said MacPherson. “I am looking forward to this campaign year and to the support of the people of Aroostook as we work together to achieve our goal.”
The campaign’s official kick-off event is the Maine Mutual-United Way Golf Tournament that will be held Sept. 8 at the Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield. This year’s tournament is expected to raise over $30,000.
“At the heart of our United Way are the volunteers and donors who make the commitment to respond to the needs of their neighbors,” said Claudia Stevens, executive director. “For over 50 years, United Way of Aroostook has served as a lifeline for those county people who struggle every day for the basic needs of food and safe shelter, freedom from abuse and neglect, home care for the elderly and ill, and training for those with disability.”
