Bill focuses on ‘eco-friendly’ trucks

AUGUSTA – Rep. Richard Cleary, D-Houlton, has submitted legislation that would encourage the use of environmentally friendly tractor-trailer trucks in Maine.
Like energy-efficient home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines with the EnergyStar logo, the Environmental Protection Agency offers “SmartWay” certification for  environmentally friendly trucks.
“This bill is another important step toward reducing carbon emissions in the region and complements Maine’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative,” said Cleary. “Reducing emissions and fuel costs will not only serve to help the environment, but will benefit businesses and consumers as well.”
Energy-efficient trucks typically weigh more than their counterparts, reducing their total cargo weight. This bill would take the additional weight of the cab into consideration and give certified trucks an additional 400 pound allowance in cargo weight removing the disincentive that kept truckers from using these trucks.
In addition to low-emission vehicle certification, the EPA’s SmartWay program supports reduction of idling and other environmentally sustainable practices. Partnerships with various truck and rail carriers, freight shippers, truck stops and other companies promote a nationwide reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
