Tom Hawkes, son Chris and wife Amanda arrived in Island Falls on Friday Oct. 5 hauling a great, long trailer which held a good-sized tractor with a backhoe and bulldozer. They immediately began the process of digging up the stumps of two big trees that had been cut down a while before. That was a long process, plus a messy one.
A big rock was removed from my lawn and other cosmetic work was done. All of which has left me with a lot of cleaning to do which I have already gotten into using my trusty wheelbarrow and hoe. The local menagerie has been around check out the dug-up areas. I hope they approve. The trailer and tractor left for home around 3 p.m. on Friday after the hard workers enjoyed a large combination pizza from Bishop’s Market.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Pankrantz have returned home to Kansas after spending the summer months at their cottage on Pleasant Pond. They have been enjoying the Maine summers for 20 years now and look forward to returning every May. Doris and I swim together several times a week at Vacationland Estates, so I will miss her company.
I have been busy cleaning up the debris left from all the bulldozing on my lawn – lots of rocks and sod to be taken care of. I have left all the cleared space for the pesky skunks to check out. Maybe they’ll dig up some grubs.
The little chickadees were some put out during all that noise and confusion, but seem to have recovered from it all. The woodpeckers have been around, too, to eat all the peanut butter mixture I put on the cedar limbs.
I had four deer romping around the backyard the other evening. They really had a great time playing tag or whatever — lots of leaping and cavorting before they all ran off into the winds.
