For the second time this season, the Southern Knights of Houlton were beaten in overtime by the Valley Mustangs, 40-34.
In a game that featured momentum changes and big defensive stops, both football teams had their chances of scoring and in the end, Valley capitalized.
ON THE MOVE – Jesse DaEira, No. 10, of the Southern Knights looks for room to run against the Valley Mustangs during last Saturday’s game at Community Park. It was the Knights second overtime loss to the Mustangs.
"We were very pleased with the performance of our freshmen players yet again," said Assistant Coach Richard Cleary. "When [David] Flint went down with an injury, we put the ball in Caleb Black's hands. He and Jesse played with real courage and determination."
Cleary was also impressed with the Knights’ offensive line.
ROOM TO RUN – Caleb Black, No. 35, of the Southern Knights clutches the ball as he races down the field against the Valley Mustangs defense.
“They showed a lot of heart and had some great blocks. I think we'll be fine in the playoffs. I know the guys are looking forward to another rematch.”
The Knights cracked the scoreboard first when David Flint ran into the end zone. But, Valley responded quickly to tie the game at 7-all. The Knights retook the lead when Jesse DaEira ran 21 yards and dove across the end line.
Then, the momentum sweep happened. The Mustangs ran off two touchdowns to take a 20-14 lead at halftime.
Taking a gut check, the Knights opened the second half with another DaEira touchdown, followed by Caleb Black’s run into the end zone. The Mustangs cut back into the lead, but the Knights took a 34-28 spread on DaEira’s third touchdown run.
On the last play of regulation, the Mustangs tied the game on Steven King’s long run. In sudden death, the Mustangs passed to an open Brandon Bosse for the score, but missed the extra point attempt. On the Knights’ turn, they fell just short of scoring when Johnny Sanders was brought down.
The Knights will play Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Caribou Sincock Field when they take on the First Citizens Huskies.
