Oakfield Senior Citizens
By Charlotte Marley

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, Oakfield Senior Citizens met at the Smoki-Haulers Snowmobile Club with 31 members attending.
After the blessing of the food a great pot-luck luncheon was enjoyed by all. The tables were adorned with lots of colorful Halloween pumpkins, haunted houses, candy favors, and other seasonal decorations.
The meeting was brought to order by Bob Locke with The Lord’s Prayer and Flag Salute. The lucky Mystery Gift winners this week were: Peggy Sanders, Marie Gilotti and Mary Lawler. All the weekly reports were read and accepted.
Many participated in wearing Halloween costumes; there were witches, a devil, pair of blue jeans/genes, 50’s poodle skirt and saddle shoes, hobos, cushion, etc. Much fun was had by all. After the costume parade there were songs by several members of the group, all had musical instruments. It is hoped that more will join the singing group soon.
The next meeting will be Nov. 7.
Those attending were: from Oakfield, Tessie Barrett, Merle and Evelyn Burpee, Martha Chapados, Thelma Flowers, Aubine Fox, Mildred Gagnon, Jackie Kennedy, Ursula Levesque, Bob and Delores Locke, Edith Hardy, Alma Clark, David Burpee and Bernice Campbell; from Dyer Brook, Marie Gilotti and Wannetta Townsend; from New Limerick, Doreen and Joe Messina and Sandra and Wendell Holmes; from Patten, Mary Lawler; from Smyrna, Juanita Lilley, Bunny Stewart, Peggy and Larry Sanders, Charlotte and Barry Short, Ele Chambers, Charlotte and Don Marley.

TOPS ME 233 of Houlton
By Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly #233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Oct. 19 meeting.
Leader Kay Grass had charge of the meeting.
Fourteen TOPS and six KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) were weighed and stayed for the meeting.
Loser of the week was Ardella Bennett with Janette Nelson as runner-up.
The 50/50 was won by Melva Folsom; the skinny dish was held over.
Charlotte Marley was the official greeter. Greeters for the following months are: for November, Barbara Troy and for December, Joyce Estey.
The yearbook, North Star, was passed around. Some of the familiar graduates’ pictures were in it; one especially, Janette Bates, now Janette Nelson.
Kay suggested that if anyone has a special article or story of interest, to please bring it to TOPS to share. She requested notions and ways from those who lost weight recently to tell us their secrets.
Charlotte Marley will have the program for November 16. Other members will take their turn.
Kay’s program was on fiber and a break-through formula with fiber. It was taken from a popular magazine that provided meals and suggested foods. Some of the fiber sources listed were: oatmeal, rice, prunes, pears, almonds, popcorn and spinach.
For information about our chapter you may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483. The meeting starts at 10 after weigh-in at 8 a.m. until 8:45.
Everyone is welcome.

Ricker Rumblings
By Lois Downing

Good morning everyone on this beautiful fall day. The foliage is still beautiful and we are enjoying it immensely.
Shirley Nason recently had a day in Bangor with her sister and spent the day shopping. She reports having a wonderful time.
Janice McCarthy had a day of shopping on Friday but hers was in Belfast and accompanied by a friend.
Alma Gallop and Carolyn Young, volunteers at Good as New store in Market Square, recently had a beautiful silver bracelet and a certificate given to each for 10 years of service. Ten years is a long time to volunteer and their outstanding job was recognized. I’m glad.
The 50th wedding anniversary celebration of Leonard and Marcie Michaud at St. Mary of the Visitation Church last Saturday, October 20, was a lovely event. A celebration of the Eucharist was performed by Rev. Eddy Morin and Deacon Albert Burleigh, also renewal of vows. The Mass was followed by a buffet style supper in the parish center. The event was hosted by the family of the Michauds, and sons Timothy and Mark. Congratulations to Leonard and Marcie. Leonard was a volunteer here a while back on Meals on Wheels.
Louise Weston, often seen walking around town— rain or shine, fell downtown a few days ago. Word has it that she broke her elbow.  Louise lives on Drake’s hill and is an avid walker. Sorry, Louise.
The electricity went off here around town on Thursday, about 8:30 a.m. It always brings us to mind about how we depend on electricity, water and all other utilities. It sure messed up my answering machine, plus microwave. It won’t be the last, I’m sure.
Ken Larson, popular person of the FAA (retired), told us about a nice thing happening to him recently at McDonald’s in Houlton. While conversing with two ladies who were waiting for their meal, same as Ken was, they noticed his World War II hat. Before they left, they walked to where Ken was sitting and presented him with a $25 certificate for serving in World War II. Now isn’t that a great story? They were perfect strangers—just shows how great some people can be. Be sure to observe Ken’s hat when you see him. He will explain those bars and other subjects on his cap.
Irene Harrington, Meals on Wheels director in the community room, was sewing a lap quilt in her spare time the other day. Tickets for the lap quilts will be going on sale soon, to benefit the Meals on Wheels program. The lap quilts will be given to shut-ins and people in need and I may say they are beautiful too! More on this later.
Keep in mind, Monday, Oct. 29 for a program here on Medicare and its benefits. Lots of changes going on with Medicare, and the income guidelines have gone up, so if you need help, come to Ricker on Monday, the 29th at 10 a.m.
My thought for the day is taken from John 8:12, …”I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, that shall have the light of life.”
Have a wonderful week.
Senior Citizen Club
The Senior Citizen Club consisting of folks from Sherman, Stacyville, Silver Ridge and Benedicta met for potluck lunch at the Sherman Gym on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
Those attending were Fred and Annie Atkinson, Dean McKinney, Linnea Perry, Margaret Duffy, Jane Gagnon, Teresa Albert, Mary Dickinson, Donna Grass, Eva Perry, and Bonita Staples. It is always a fine meal of delicious variety of the “dishes” prepared by those present. Small group that we were!
Our next meeting will be on Nov. 7. We decided to play the Game using a dollar bill individually instead of bringing a gift bag.
A van driven by Mary Atkinson was the conveyance that took members of this club to Eagle Lake on their fall trip where they ate at a restaurant and returned via a different route.
Fran Gorman drove her own car with passengers Ethel Morgan and Jane Gagnon. Aboard the van were: Fred and Annie Atkinson, Fred and Sylvia Lilley, Dean and Frances McKenne, Teresa Albert, Linnea Perry, Margaret Duffy, and Mary Dickinson.
It was a beautiful colored leaf peeping bright summer day, much enjoyed, thanks to our van operator.

Hodgdon Methodist Club
Hodgdon Methodist men and women’s club met for a potluck supper Wednesday night. President Wilma Welton held a business meeting. Bible devotions were read by Bonnie Quint. Cards were sent to several people. Monetary gifts will be sent to the Christian radio station, Salvation Army, Animal Shelter, and the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor. Also the Child, the club supports in India. A donation was given to support Taylor Quint and her horse, Jackson, to go to the World Championship Appaloosa Horse Show in Fort Worth, Texas this month.
It was voted to not have a Hunter’s Breakfast this year. A Christmas Bazzar will be Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the church.
Attending: Marylin Howard, Wilma Welton, Pat Quint, Helen Cleary, Kate and Dave Pyle, Bonnie and Duane Quint. The next meeting will be Nov. 21.
