Citizens pursue petition to stop consolidation

STONINGTON — A citizen initiative petition to repeal the recently enacted school consolidation law has been drafted by the Office of the Revisor of Statutes, approved by the Maine Coalition to Save Schools, formatted by the Bureau of Elections, and will be printed this week.
Petitions were scheduled to be distributed across the state this past weekend. A total of 55,087 signatures must be filed with the Secretary of State’s office no later than Jan. 28, 2008, if the petition is to be considered by the Second Regular Session of the 123rd Legislature which convenes on Jan. 1, 2008.  If the Legislature fails to enact the petition, then the voting public will have an opportunity to repeal the law on Nov. 4, 2008. The Coalition hopes to collect 100,000 signatures to demonstrate to the Governor and Legislature how widespread the support for repeal of this law is. Their goal is to have the collection of signatures completed before the holiday season in December.
Anyone wishing to become a member of the Coalition or wants to volunteer to collect signatures on the petitions may contact Skip Greenlaw at skipg@hypernet.com or call him at 367-2738 or 460-1260.
