HOULTON — A pedestrian was hurt Friday night after being struck by an oncoming car.
Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin said a 17-year-old Houlton male, dressed in dark clothing, was crossing Military Street just before 6:30 p.m. when he was struck by west-bound car.
The driver, a 16-year-old male, said he attempted to swerve but was unable to avoid the walker.
At impact, the pedestrian’s head hit the windshield of the car; he was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital and eventually to Eastern Maine Medical Center. Asselin said at the time, it appeared the injuries were life-threatening, but he said the 17-year-old’s condition has since been upgraded.
Police say that night’s dark, rainy conditions may have contributed to the accident and that the 17-year-old was not crossing in a designated crosswalk. Speed is not believed to be a factor, said Asselin.
