Potato Barrel returns to UMPI

    PRESQUE ISLE – On Thursday, Oct. 25, the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls defeated rival team, University of Maine at Fort Kent, with a score of 3-1. The first goal of the match was scored by freshman Mindy Dolley when she launched a shot from just outside the 18. The second goal of the game was also scored in the first half by Dolley when she finished a set kick by senior captian Anna Delong, from Presque Isle.

     The Fort Kent Bengals came out strong in the second half, and a goal was netted by Jordyann Blacke off an assist from Brianne McGary. UMPI’s junior striker, Erian Pelletier of Madawaska, answered back with a goal off a corner kick to seal the victory for the lady Owls. After the match, the UMPI women celebrated as the traditional “potato barrel” was handed over to UMPI captains Rachel Nightingale, Anna Delong and Erin Pelletier. The “potato barrel” will remain in the possession of the UMPI team until the two rival teams meet again next fall.
    On Sunday, the Owls began their last match of the season by honoring their seniors, Julie Wescott of Westbrook, Lize Maynard of Washburn, Rachel Willey of Caribou, Nightingale of Hermon and Anna Delong of Presque Isle.
    The UMPI women ended their season with an impressive 3-0 win over the University of Maine at Machais. UMPI outshot their opponent 24 to one and dominated ball possession. Junior striker Erin Pelletier, of Madawaska, tucked away two goals in the match, ending her season with an impressive 12 goals and two assists. Freshman Jessica Kinney, of Caribou, netting the last goal of the season for the Owls.
        Coach Tammy Krul was very pleased with the team’s effort this season. “We overcame many obstacles to get to this point. The ladies trained hard and noticeably improved each week. It was very rewarding to work with such a dedicated group of athletes.”
    The Owls end their season with an overall record of 8-8. After a slow start, the team ended strong and finished first in their conference.
