The Whittier Congregational Church held its annual fall Bake and Rummage Sale on Oct. 27 in the vestry of the church. During the sale, homemade muffins, tea and coffee were also available at a small price.
Also, tickets were available for a chance to win a hand-made lap robe donated by Evelyn Robinson. This was won by Verna Boone.
The sale was attended by many people, and, despite the rainy weather, was a success.
Mrs. Mary (Dunphy) Roberts has returned home to Tyler, Texas after spending her summer at the family cottage on Upper Mattawamkeag Lake. On her way back, she stopped in the Augusta area to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Judson Roberts (the former Eula Corliss) and was met there by her son Mark who then drove back to Texas with Mary.
Mr. Ed Wood, nephew of Riva Hawkes, was in town briefly this past week to close up his camp for the coming winter. He stopped in to say hello before he left to return to New Hampshire.
I have had many hungry birds lately at the feeders, and I am kept quite busy running out to keep them all happy and fed. Now I have a pair of nuthatches and, of course, the peanut butter hungry woodpeckers, plus the gorby blue jays.
I had a lean and hungry-looking black cat up in the cedar tree where the feeders are, but so far, I don’t think he has done away with any of my birds.
The deer family is still arriving in late afternoon. I looked out and instead of the usual four there were seven out there. I guess word has gotten around that there is free food available. My next-door neighbor Casey has been over a couple times to watch the deer, but they’re a little leery of her so they take off with a flash of white tails when they see her too close.
News for Nov. 14
Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Palmer left Nov. 7 to spend the winter months at their home in sunny Florida.
Clayton and Charlene Webb have entertained recently at a supper at their home, serving baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, hot dogs, and homemade bread to guests Teedee and Carl Shields, Conn., Gene and Ruth Spellman, Houlton, and Mr. and Mrs. Junior Shaw and son, Scott, from Patten. Following this tasty meal, three desserts were offered to the guests — their choice of lemon pie, apple pie or chocolate cream pie. I think I would have had a slice of each.
Have heard recently from The Richard DeLongs who reside permanently in Brooksville, Florida. They are doing well and have recently entertained the Harveys (Wallace and Jeannette, who live in Patten and go south for the winter) as Wallace had his birthday since arriving to stay the winter where the snow does not fly.
Am really having fun watching all the different birds now attracted to my feeders, the newest addition are the red polls and grosbeaks, and instead of one woodpecker, I now have several and all of these make short work of the peanut butter mixture I put on the tree branches. Keeps me busy mixing it all together. The gray squirrels like it too and also all bird seed. One was hanging precariously the other day by his feet and tail from the tree branch and gobbling seed as fast as he could. Doesn’t seem to bother him to eat upside down. After the heavy rain on Saturday, I noticed that Rock Island in Mattawamkeag Lake was almost covered. Thought that the Burtons in Rancho Cordova would like to hear that as they live on the lake during the summer. My deer family are still around — arriving every afternoon for their goodies. If they stay close to the house, they may survive the hunting season. Lately they have been using the back lawn for an afternoon nap — lying there peacefully for two or three hours. Then ready for their snack, then back off to the woods again.
