HOULTON — The spirit of giving came early in downtown Houlton as one merchant encouraged residents and fellow businesses to take part in a fund-raising dinner for a friend in need.
Joyce Transue and her employees volunteered their evening to hold a special spaghetti supper to support local merchant Carol Horner of Carol’s Country Yarns, who was diagnosed with cancer. More than 100 people crossed the threshold of the Courtyard Café on 59 Main Street to take part in the benefit supper last Monday, Nov. 12.
“I’m really happy that people were as supportive as they were and I really do want to thank the community for being so supportive, I can’t reiterate that enough,” explained Transue. “It was really successful and I am so grateful and I know Carol is too.”
Transue said that the showing of support has really boosted her friend’s morale.
“Cancer has returned for the third time now and I decided that the best way to help her was to help her financially,” said Transue. “We all know that it can be a major setback to not be in good health. I can’t thank the community enough.”
Transue said when it’s all said and done; the final tally for last week’s supper could reach well beyond $3,000. She said $700 of that was raised from the silent auction alone.
“Carol was extremely overwhelmed, she’s speechless at the outcome and she really feels that the community has embraced her and that’s really the most important message is that she really feels that the community has reached out to her and helped her through this,” said Transue.
Transue said anyone interested in making a contribution could stop by the Courtyard Café or call her at 532-0787.
