HANOVER, N.H. — Peter McCormick Hagan, from Houlton (04730), has enrolled as a member of the class of 2011 at Dartmouth College.
Hagan is the son of Gary J. Hagan and Margaret R. Hagan.
Dartmouth, the ninth oldest college in the nation, was founded in 1769. Noted as a highly competitive college, Dartmouth has a total enrollment of 4,200 undergraduates and over 1,000 graduate students in engineering, business, and medicine.
CASTINE — Midshipman Carly Caron of Houlton was recently sworn in as member of the Maine Maritime Academy Regiment of Midshipman at a ceremony held earlier this fall during the college annual Family Weekend. The midshipman oath was administered to the 176 candidates by Captain Jeff Loustaunau, Commandant of Midshipmen and Port Captain, marking the successful conclusion of Regimental Preparatory Training (RPT).
RPT, a six week intensive training program, emphasizes traditions of the MMA Regiment of Midshipmen, military drill, aquatic training, and ship familiarization. While in the program, candidates for the Regiment of Midshipmen receive instruction and guidance in their conduct and responsibilities as midshipmen and potential seafaring officers. The MMA Regiment of Midshipmen, a student-run management model, is comprised of students seeking a U.S. Merchant Marine license as a third mate or a third assistant engineer on unlimited tonnage vessels following graduation. For other students at the college, participation in the Regional is optional. The regimental system promotes learning and self-reliance, leadership, and effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Caron, a graduate of Houlton High School is a member of the MMA Class of 2011. She is majoring in Marine Biology.

Caron was one of the eight midshipmen selected for the first-year honor based upon exemplary performance as a junior member of the Regiment. She demonstrated personal growth and excellence, enhanced teambuilding skills, and improved leadership ability during the Regimental Preparatory Training process.
