FORT FAIRFIELD – Local police were busy over the weekend responding to two fatal car accidents in just over a 24-hour period.
At approximately 5:55 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, the Fort Fairfield Police Department was alerted to a single-vehicle traffic accident involving personal injuries on the North Caribou Road. Upon arrival, police found the sole occupant trapped inside.    “Heidi Jones, 43, of Fort Fairfield, had to be extricated from the 2002 Jeep Wrangler. The Fort Fairfield Fire Department used hydraulic equipment to free the victim from the wreckage,” said Stan Nicholson, the patrol detective in charge of the investigation. “It appears she lost control and went off the road. No other vehicles were involved.”
Nicholson said Jones was transported by Crown Ambulance to Cary Medical Center in Caribou where she was later pronounced dead.
Maine State Police and the U.S. Border Patrol assisted at the scene. No estimate was available on damage to the Jeep.
The accident remains under investigation but it is believed alcohol was a factor.
Those who wish may make donations in Jones’ memory to Caribou Pet Rescue, P.O. Box 488, Caribou, ME 04736. Friends may express their condolences to the family at www.lancastermorgan.com.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, the FFPD was notified of yet another serious automobile accident, this time on the South Caribou Road.
“At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 17, the FFPD was alerted to a traffic accident involving personal injuries on the South Caribou Road. The FFFD First Responders, along with Crown Ambulance, arrived on scene and provided immediate care to James H. Michaud, Jr., 20, of Fort Fairfield,” said Nicholson.
According to Nicholson, Michaud was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was partially ejected from his 1998 Mercury Sable. The car sustained extensive damage to the top and all sides.
Michaud was transported by Crown to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The case remains under investigation. Nicholson indicated high speed was a factor in the accident.
Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at the funeral home with Pastor Darren Bonville officiating. Interment will take place at New Holy Rosary Cemetery.
