A Stockholm woman said her prayers were answered when she received her mother’s ring back from another woman who had discovered it while shopping in the produce department at the Caribou Shop and Save.

Vivian Merritt looks at her mother’s ring that was retrieved from the corn display in the produce department at the Shop and Save grocery store in Caribou.

“I had torn the house apart,” Merritt said Tuesday when she discovered that she had lost the heirloom.
The piece of jewelry, which had six stones representing her six children, was found six weeks ago in the fresh corn at the grocery store by Brenda Cote of Caribou. The Aroostook Republican published a story on Cote’s quest to find the real owner two weeks ago.
Merritt said that after she was shown the story by her sister, Norma Sund, she contacted the store about the ring. Store officials then contacted Cote to verify that Merritt was the owner.
“They put her on the phone and she described the ring to me,” said Cote. “I’m very pleased that rightful owner found her ring. I’m sure it means more to her than anyone else.”
Merritt said that she usually kept it on the kitchen window sill and would wear the ring when she went out. However, she didn’t realize it was missing until she went to put it on and it wasn’t there.
“My prayers were answered,” Merritt said of Cote’s discovery.
