The Maine School of Science and Math in Limestone has been named as one of the top 100 high schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report magazine.
The listing ranked the magnet school as 35th in the nation, according to a letter received by the school from Brian Kelley, editor of the magazine.     MSSM is the only the school from Maine to make the publication’s “gold list,” while four Maine high school earned silver medals, placing them in the top 505.
Eight state schools were among the top 1,591 schools to earn bronze medals.
Easton Junior-Senior High School and Washburn District High School earned bronze medals.
Schools officials contacted Tuesday were ecstatic about the award and were busy responding to numerous  media calls.
“Our graduates tell us that their education at MSSM sets them apart from the graduates of other schools,” said Walt Warner, the school’s executive director.
“They feel more than adequately prepared for the first and often second years of college because of the quality of teachers and their ability to create a really stimulating learning environment.”
The Limestone school opened in 1995 as a result of the closure of neighboring Loring Air Force Base.
