SERVING – Members of the Houlton National Honor Society recently hosted a dinner as its annual group volunteer activity through the Umbrella of Care organization. Getting ready to serve community members were, from left, Parker Brown, Musa Bilal and Hunter Caron.
National Honor Society is an organization that was formed in 1921 in order to recognize student achievement. Students are selected by a group of teachers according to their character strengths, leadership traits, and academic performance.
Houlton’s chapter has 13 members this year, and is led by Dawn Matthews. Casey Faulkingham was voted in as president at the end of the 2007 school year, while Musa Bilal and Tiffany Bossie were awarded the vice president and secretary positions after returning for the 2008 school year. Max Rush was recently voted into the fourth and final, treasurer position.
Each year each chapter of NHS much completes a group volunteer project to help the community. Last years group cleaned and polished the War Veterans plaque, which hangs in the high school. This year members voted that a benefit dinner would be the best way to do their group volunteering and help the community.
Members got together on a Sunday afternoon and prepared a fettuccini alfredo dish, with salad and ice cream for desert. The students then served the food that night for the Umbrella Of Care meal, a non-profit organization that gives people around the community the chance to come together, converse, and have a meal.
“All the members really came together to help with the meal,” said president Casey Faulkingham “It was awesome to be able to help the community in any way. Big or small.”
