STANDISH – The University of Maine at Presque Isle faced off against Saint Joseph’s College in the Merry Monk Classic and earned their first win of the season, 62-48. Leading the way for the Owls was junior forward Erica Davis (Cumberland, ME) with a game high 19 points. Davis also worked in the paint for 10 rebounds to achieve a double-double for the game and nearly reached triple-double status as she grabbed eight steals. Three other Owls reached double-digit point figures; freshman guard Megan Korhonen (Littleton, ME) scored 15 points and grabbed five offensive rebounds, while teammates Anna Lenentine (Monticello, ME) and Julie Wescott (Westbrook, ME) each put up 10 points in the game. Senior guard Ashley Brooker (Limestone, ME) added eight points.

In the previous night’s contest, the Owls lost to Green Mountain College, 49-47, on an Eagles jump shot with three seconds left to go in the ballgame. UMPI junior Erica Davis led the charge for the Owls with a double-double effort (17 points, 11 rebounds). Booker shot 6-12 from the floor and provided 16 points. Lenentine grabbed a game high 12 rebounds for UMPI in the losing bid. UMPI moves to 1-4.
“I am proud of how my team came back to beat St. Joe’s on Saturday after losing a tough game the previous night,” commented head coach Tracy Guerrette. “I want my players to see every game as an opportunity for growth and improvement, and we certainly learned a lot from the Green Mountain game. If we stay focused on the process, the results will take care of themselves.”
Davis was selected to the Merry Monks Classic All-Tournament team for her outstanding play over the weekend.
Owl men drop two
The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team traveled to North Carolina over the weekend to take part in the 2007 Roger Taylor Invitational Tournament. UMPI opened the weekend against host NC Wesleyan, who shot 52 percent in the first half en route to a 61-19 halftime advantage. The Wesleyan’s initial run was too much to overcome as they pulled off the victory, 98-42. Junior center, Perry Busateri (Milwaukee, WI) lead Owl scoring with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Anthony Wingate (East Orange, NJ) added eight points in the loss. In the consolation game, the Owls faced Catholic University and lost with by a score of 80-38. Leading the way for UMPI was Anthony Wingate with 16 points, Perry Busateri added nine in the losing effort. UMPI drops to 0-4 on the season.
