Girls’ grades three and four basketball

    The Black Bears withstood a late Irish rush to hold on for the 14-11 win last Wednesday afternoon. Leslie Mejia scored all four of her points in the pivotal second quarter for the Black Bears, when they outscored the Irish 6-2. Taylor Williams shook off a cold first half to finish with a game high six points for the Black Bears, all coming in the second half. Alison Bell and Heather Kirk also chipped in with two points each for the Black Bears. The Irish were led by the duo of Gina El Nesr and Grace Braley, both of whom finished with four points.     Jake Kinney put Arizona up early against Syracuse, but Syracuse rallied for the 18-8 victory. Sam Gray’s lone basket, scored in the first quarter, put Syracuse up for good. Caleb Nadeau led the balanced Syracuse attack with 10 points. Grant Bridges, Joseph Boone and Oliver Gerrish each chipped in with two points. Arizona got two points apiece from the quartet of Kinney, Chandler Caron, Corrie Kilcollins and Eddie Kilcollins. Dylan Lovely also chipped in with several key rebounds for Arizona, as did Patrick Cash for Syracuse.
    Michigan outlasted Duke in last Monday’s second matchup, despite having just five players, holding on for the 21-16 win. Nick Bartlett led Michigan in scoring with eight points, including a couple long range shots. Brandon McLean finished with seven points, and Kyle Rider rounded out the scoring with six points. Duke was led by Connor Murchison’s eight points and numerous rebounds. Frank Dawson contributed two points and an assist to Drew Henderson for Henderson’s two points. Hunter Trask and Khasen Lowe also each finished with two points.
    Grant Stewart scored seven points in the pivotal third quarter to help North Carolina pick up the victory over Arizona. Stewart ended with a game high nine points. Nicolas Shields contributed four points and Marcus Ouellette tacked on three points to round out the scoring for North Carolina. Jake Kinney got the only basket for Arizona, giving them the 2-0 lead in the opening moments of the game. Issac Devine and Dylan Lovely also played well in defeat for Arizona.
    Syracuse jumped out to the early 4-0 lead en route to a 16-10 win over a pesky Michigan team. Syracuse was led in scoring by Caleb Nadeau, who finished with a game high eight points. Joseph Boone and Sam Gray each tallied four points. Kyle Rider was the high scorer for Michigan, ending with six points. Michigan also got two points each from Brandon McLean and Nick Bartlett. Cole Staples provided Michigan with several key rebounds, and Gavin Kelley played hard nosed defense on the Syracuse guards. Judah Olugbemi was the defensive stopper for Syracuse, while Patrick Cash ripped down numerous rebounds.
    North Carolina’s defense clamped down against Duke, helping propel them to the 24-8 decision. Noah Kinney led the way with a game high nine points, including six in a pivotal 11-0 North Carolina run in the second quarter. Nicolas Shields popped in eight points, and Grant Stewart added five points. Andrew Lessard finished with two points. Duke was led by Connor Murchison’s four points. Drew Henderson and Wyatt Kennedy also chipped in two points apiece.
Kids’ Christmas party
    The Presque Isle Recreation Department is once again hosting a Christmas party for children in grades one to five. The event will be on Friday, Dec. 14 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required with limited space available. The fee is $5 per child, plus a $3 to $5 Red Sox Swap gift. Registration begins Friday, Nov. 28 at the William V. Haskell Community Center.
Fort Fairfield Area
Cross country ski rentals

    The package for boys and girls grades two to eight for the entire winter is $25 ($20 for each additional child) and includes boots, bindings, skis and poles. Ski packages can be picked up at the community center starting on Thursday, Dec. 13 from 3 to 6 p.m. or Saturday, Dec.15 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Youth cross country ski program
    The youth cross country ski program for boys and girls in grades two to five and six to eight begins on Thursday, Jan. 17 from 3 to 4:15 p.m. at the Fort Fairfield Ski Trails located beside the elementary school. Skiers will meet at the elementary school cafeteria immediately after school. The program will be held every Thursday and will continue through the end of March. Beginning on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon and continuing through the end of March, kids can also participate in the Saturday morning kids ski club at the Nordic Heritage Center. There is a $10 registration fee.
Reduced price ski tickets
    Reduced price ski tickets for Big Rock Mountain will be available for purchase through the parks and recreation department this winter. The any-time tickets will be sold at the community center for $17 for juniors and $22 for adults. Tickets can be purchased Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment.    
Adult basketball

    Adult basketball will be held on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $1 each night.
Co-ed volleyball
    Adult co-ed volleyball (16 and over) will be held on Sunday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $1 each night.
Youth travel basketball
    Any boys or girls in grades four to six currently participating in the Fort Fairfield Youth Basketball Program who would also like to play on the recreation travel basketball teams, practice will be held on Tuesdays at the community center and Fridays at the elementary school. The boys team will practice on Tuesdays from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. and on Fridays from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. The girls team will practice on Tuesdays from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. and on Fridays from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m.
Pee wee and youth basketball
    Pee wee basketball for boys and girls in grades one to three and youth basketball for boys and girls in grades four to six is currently underway at the community center. The pee wee program is held on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons and will continue into February. The youth program is held on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings and will also continue into February.
Indoor walking and jogging
    The community center gymnasium is open to the public for walking and jogging Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to noon except on holidays.
    There is no charge to participate.
