BRIDGEWATER – Two drivers escaped serious injury the afternoon of Dec. 3 on Route 1.
Poor road conditions are being blamed for a two-vehicle accident in an area known as Bunker Hill in Bridgewater Monday.     “Deborah Mason, 59, of Westfield, was operating a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup southbound on Bunker Hill, in Bridgewater, when she lost control and spun backward into Bret Delong, 43, of Blaine, who was going down the hill, northbound,” said Sgt. Thomas Pelletier, of the Maine State Police.
Pelletier said Delong attempted to avoid Mason but was unable to do so.
Mason’s vehicle struck Delong’s 2001 Chevy pickup just behind his driver’s door, ripping apart the pickup body,” explained Pelletier.
Mason was transported by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center suffering from neck and back pain. She was reportedly wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Pelletier said Delong suffered minor cuts to his face and back stiffness and was transported to TAMC by personal vehicle. Delong was not wearing his seatbelt but the airbag did deploy in his vehicle.
“Both Delong and Mason were treated for their injuries and expected to be released,” said Pelletier.
Mason’s Dodge and Delong’s Chevy sustained extensive damage, estimated at a combined total of $20,000.
Law enforcement throughout Aroostook County responded to several calls about accidents related to the storm that began Monday, Dec. 3 and continued through the early morning hours of Tuesday, Dec. 4. No serious accidents had been reported as of presstime.
Police advise drivers to use caution when traveling ice- and snow-covered roads, reduce speeds accordingly, leave a safe distance between vehicles and allow extra travel time to reach a destination. Also, clear windows and lights of snow and ice, as well as license plates.
