Money donated is used to purchase perishable items and is very much appreciated by Janette Parady who oversees the food pantry with assistance from Don Copeland.
Many non-perishable items are donated regularly by individuals and by local organizations throughout the year and Mrs. Parady sends her sincere thanks to all who participate in this endeavor.
Recent guests of Clayton and Charlene Webb have been their nephew and wife, Buddy and Linda Webb from Sebec. They drove over to Linneus and enjoyed lunch at Grammy’s Country Inn and from there went to Smyrna where they did some shopping at the Amish store. Buddy and Linda have since returned to Sebec.
The annual Christmas party of the Whittier Congregational Church was held in the vestry on Dec. 7. All who attended enjoyed a pot luck dinner served by Marion Hoar and Candy McKellar. Tables were decorated with candles and the dessert table hosted a pretty Christmas tree.
Preceding the dinner, grace was given by Pastor Michael Kasevich. Following the dinner, guests were given a series of questions about the birth of Jesus and this proved very interesting. A yankee swap was then held to end the evening and was much enjoyed by all.
On Dec. 12, the Katahdin Club held their annual Christmas party and gift exchange at the home of Verna MacArthur with a pot luck luncheon. Preceding the luncheon, table grace was given by Laura Bomba. Twelve members attended along with guest Karen McNally who played for the Christmas carol sing-a-long and also for Laura Bomba’s rendition of “O Holy Night.”
A wonderful social time was enjoyed and everyone signed cards to be sent to Louise Berry and Edna Schmidt who were unable to attend.
I have finally discovered the identity of the very pretty raspberry-colored birds that have been seen in many birdfeeders this winter. A friend informed me that they are pine grosbeaks and not scarlet tanagers.
I looked all through my bird book and still could not find the pine grosbeaks. But I’m very sure that is what they are as they are certainly big like a grosbeak and have a big bill. A friend called from Sherman to say she has lots of them in her feeders.
I still see the female cardinals at the feeders, but I haven’t seen the male in a while. I have lots of chickadees and red polls especially since the cold weather. I keep running out with the seeds and the peanut butter and lard mixture that they need for energy.
The deer family arrive very faithfully about dark and I am now putting their goodies on my front lawn also. It’s fun to watch them very carefully make their way back from the house to the front yard. Anyone driving by could get a good look at them there as long as the deer aren’t spooked by headlights and noise.
