Houlton cheerleaders come in second

Eastern Maine Championship is Saturday
With two cheering competitions behind them, the Houlton High School cheerleaders will compete in the Eastern Maine Championships Saturday in Bangor.     “We definitely need to tighten up our routine,” said coach Mary Jane Cleary. “We need our motions to be crisp and our timing needs to be in synch.”
The Houlton cheerleaders finished second last Friday night at the Aroostook League Cheerleading Competition in Caribou behind the hometown squad, with Presque Isle in third and Mars Hill in fourth.
“We did really well in the first round,” Cleary said, “but, we did have a deduction in that round.”
The Houlton cheerleaders are pulling off difficult stunts and dance moves, but timing seems to be an issue, as well as whether or not their pyramid is legal.
“During the second round, some of our cheerleaders were nervous because a portion of the pyramid was questioned by the lead official as having an illegal element,” said Cleary. “We are still waiting for a ruling on the pyramid.”
After working this week at cleaning up their routine with snappier, sharper and more rhythmic movement, the Houlton cheerleaders are hoping to land high in the regionals on Saturday.
“Timing seems to be an issue,” Cleary explained. “It’s a building year, and about one-third of our squad has no competitive experience.”
The Houlton cheerleaders did take the best tumbling and best team stunts, and in the All-star portion of the competition, Brittany Hill, Ashlee McClure, Laurel Ranck, Brianna Fowler and Ashley Cleary took top honors in the best stunt group. First-year varsity cheerleader, Marcy Hernandez was the winner in the all-star tumbling event, as well.
