Cary Library upgrades continue

HOULTON, Maine — Upgrades in the children’s section at Cary Library is moving ahead.
New tile is being set in that section in phases, said Librarian Linda Faucher.
“The floor had to be done in three sections because they had to remove the radiators and we can’t have the area completely without heat for the tile,” explained Faucher.
So, section by section, the books have been cleared away from one section and moved to another with help from volunteers. It takes roughly a week to tile each section, she said.
Also on tap for the children’s area, new oak bookcases and more comfortable seating.
The work is being funded through a $75,000 donation from Charles P. Starkey of Portland, Ore. The gift will not only support the children’s library work, but also replace the library’s disabled microfilm scanner with a digital machine.
His donation continues a tradition of giving started by his parents, Earle and Eleanor Starkey. Their 1992 gift supported renovations in the original Cary Library building to make room for the current children’s library, as well as, helping to establish the library’s genealogy room.
