A public hearing will be held on Monday, March 10, during the regular City Council meeting to consider new proposed changes to the local requirements regarding how close a landowner can build to the property line. “We’re trying to make it so that Caribou is more user-friendly,” said Shawn Manter, chairman of the Caribou Planning Board.
Manter said that the local Zoning Board of Appeals had received an unusual amount of requests for variances from landowners wanting to build closer to their boundaries than current local ordinances permitted.
The appeals panel asked the planning board to review the current setbacks to determine changes are warranted, Manter said.
“We took a look at the setback and felt they might be too stringent,” Manter said.
The Planning Board and the City Council have held several meetings and workshops on the issue.
The zones affected by the changes include residential, commercial, industrial and a hospital zone.
A description of the proposed changes is available for review in the City Clerk’s office at the city offices on High Street.
