PRESQUE ISLE – An automobile accident Wednesday, March 5, claimed the life of Barbara Jean Scanlan Corso, 63, as she traveled north on Interstate 95.
The accident occurred just south of Howland at around 4:42 p.m. According to Trooper Lawrence Anderson, Maine State Police, Corso apparently lost control of her 2004 Honda Accord between mile marker 210 and 211 in Edinburgh.
Anderson indicated road conditions factored into the crash. At the time, he said it was a mix of rain and mist, causing the road to be slippery. He said Corso began to slide and was unable to regain control of her vehicle, hitting a snowbank on the median of the highway and flipping the car onto its driver’s side.
An investigation of the accident determined Corso’s vehicle slid about 46 feet along the snowbank before coming to a stop. When emergency personnel arrived, Corso was already dead.
Anderson said Corso didn’t appear to be wearing her seatbelt at the time of the incident.
Corso’s dog was in the car with her at the time of the accident and survived the crash. It was taken to a nearby kennel, according to Anderson.
Crews from the Howland Fire Department and Penobscot Valley Ambulance in Lincoln assisted at the scene.
Corso reportedly had just recently moved to Presque Isle from New Jersey to take a job at The Aroostook Medical Center where she served as operating room supervisor. She is survived by her children, Jennifer, Gerald and Jonathan Corso; as well as by her friends and former husband, Joe Corso. She will be buried next to her parents, Gerald J. and Nora E. Scanlan, at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, Ill.
