What is Newspapers in Education?

     It’s a given.
Inside every issue of the Houlton Pioneer Times, the activities and achievements of area students play a starring role. Whether it’s a spelling bee, a special contest or just some plain, old-fashioned fun, their stories are the building blocks of community news coverage each week.
And Newspapers in Education is just another extension of that.

For the past six years, we’ve organized the special section to feature advertisements created by the students, showcasing their artistic side. This year, we took that idea to the next level by dedicating space to showcase the work students do every day in the classroom that sometimes only teachers, parents and grandparents get to see.
It’s writings that sometimes get crumpled in the bottom of a backpack, lost among the stack of papers that come home each night or compiled into a letter grade at the end of each quarter.
With help from area teachers, student-written poems and stories, school news and even haiku found a place. Accented with student photography, artwork and cartooning, the pages are an effort to bring student talent and creativity center stage. Powered by support from roughly 100 willing sponsors, other students designed advertisements for area businesses.
A project like this wouldn’t be possible without the support of dedicated teachers and staff members at area schools and business people.
We extend our appreciation to all of them and to the students, and hope subscribers enjoy reading this section as much as we enjoyed being involved in organizing it.
