A Lenten breakfast was held March 9 at the Whittier Congregational Church vestry and despite the poor driving conditions quite a few hardy souls attended and much enjoyed the meal prepared by Marion Hoar. She was assisted by Sam, preparing the bacon, Steve Berry doing the eggs and Donna Berry making the toast. Menu included  a baked apple French toast, made by Patti Hartin, and which didn’t last long, as it  is a very popular item on the menu. Others assisting with the breakfast were Bertha Pray and Ted and Patti Hartin. There will be two more breakfasts, the last one being on Easter Sunday, following the sunrise services.
Clayton and Charlene Webb have been in Bangor recently where Charlene consulted with her physician. They were over-night guests of their niece and family, Darlene and Greg Kenny, before returning home.
Have recently heard from friends in California, Marion and Don Burton, former residents of this area. They are both anxious to return to their cottage on Upper Mattawamkeag Lake this coming June and seeing all their friends. Hope all the snow and ice will be long gone by then and that the loons will return so all cottage residents can enjoy them and their mournful cries that is part of living at the lake.
Had a phone call from Dick Shean, who lives in Crystal, and he wanted to tell me that one day, about 10 days ago, he watched a big buck deer climb up over the snow that had accumulated almost to the top of his garage, and then walk all over the top of the building. He also said that he has seen coyote and bobcat tracks near his home, so hope these predators have not attacked the deer, which are near his home. As the weather has improved slightly, I now have a great number of different birds at my feeders. Have seen a few mourning doves in the cedar tree, plus lots of wrens, nut hatches, starlings, pine grosbeeks, and, of course, chickadees and blue jays. Now have three little red squirrels and three big gray squirrels and they really eat up the seeds so it keeps me busy trying to feed the birds, too. Fun to watch the gray squirrels hang upside down to get into the feeders. The other after noon had twelve deer running around on the crust in my backyard. The most I have seen at one time so far this winter. Usually have from four to seven. Word must have gotten out that the food is pretty good at the Hawkes house.
