HOULTON, Maine — Houlton Rotarians understand how teachers strive to teach children many lessons. One of the basic cornerstones of learning is to instill a love for reading. Another emphasis is placed on how to treat others. The Houlton Rotary Club is helping to do both by presenting a new hardbound picture book entitled “Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure” to all area elementary schools, libraries and hospitals.
Dana Delano, president of the Houlton Rotary Club states: “It is a wonderful story of how a young man goes about starting an apple dumpling business using the Rotary Club standards of making ethical and fair decisions in the business world. It was written specifically for students in the first through fourth grade level of education.”
The full color and illustrated book is a fun read for this age group and includes a lesson about Rotary Club International’s four-way test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
“I tested the new book with my third grade daughter, Sarah, and she loved it,” said Delano. “Not only is it a fun book to read with an important lesson, it even includes a recipe for Andy’s Apple Dumplings in the back.”
The Houlton Rotary Club is well known for developing programs that benefit area youth. Local Rotarians are contributing thousands of dollars this year to the Houlton Elementary School’s playground, the Houlton Recreation Department’s playground, the Little League’s new softball fields, the Dollars for Scholars, Rotary International’s Youth Exchange program for two area students, the Make a Wish Foundation and working with the Houlton Police department to give away bike helmets this spring. Past projects include the new skate park and the Soap Box Derby hill.
“Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure is planned program for Rotary International’s Literacy Program here in Southern Aroostook,” said Delano. “Literacy empowers our youth and is essential for our children’s overall health and development. We certainly hope our contribution will benefit our community through its children.”
