JACKSON, NH – Three area Nordic skiers who qualified to compete on the Maine Nordic team in early February are now three of the Maine champions of the J2 Ski Festival held in Jackson, New Hampshire March 9, 10 and 11. Danni Anderson, of Presque Isle High School; Finn Bondeson, of Caribou, and Carson Spencer of St. Francis competed in three days of racing to help Maine win the competition. Vermont led at the end of day one, with Maine and New Hampshire battling for second after a 5 km freestyle race. However, Maine stepped up in the 5 km classic and 1km classic sprint races on Saturday to grab the lead. In high speed relay action on Sunday, Maine held onto their overall lead to win the cup trophy that resides in northern Maine until next year’s competition.
The Maine Nordic team, of 20 boys and 20 girls from all over the state, was coached by Will Sweetser of the Maine Winter Sports Center, and Sarah Dominick of Stockholm.
The Maine Nordic team competed against Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Idaho, New York and Canada at the three day event.
