If you had an opportunity to join us the weekend of the March 22 for the Top Cat and Tails dinner, auction, and dance, then I don’t have to tell you what a wonderful time was had by all. Great meal, fantastic auction items, and tremendous entertainment by Tim the Tune Man Humphrey.
This entire event was organized and coordinated by Lorraine Monfils from Hollywood Pet Salon. As usual, the event was impeccable. Lorraine just has a way of pulling things together with such grace and class that you would never begin to imagine how much work went into it. She makes it appear effortless but we all know better. We know that Lorraine worked for months finding sponsors, donors, arranging for food, wait staff, decorations, auction items, and fine tuning each and every detail so that the evening went off without a hitch.
We are so fortunate to have Lorraine as a Shelter partner. Not only does she organize the best events, but she also helps us adopt out animals by showcasing them at her salon. There are always several kitties at her shop available for adoption and many more that she cares for that are of the “harder to place” variety. We are really grateful to Lorraine and all those who pitched in and helped with this event. Approximately $3,500 was raised to help the Shelter continue to care for the homeless and abused animals.
Shortly following this event was another, the Chocolate Fest project at Region II Save. Many thanks to Cathy Bither and her students for all the effort that went into this fund raising project. The presentation was flawless, the food delicious, the students well prepared and justifiably proud of their creations. What a great evening!
Our next event will be our annual walk-a-thon, adopt-a-thon and yard sale. We have tentatively set a date of May 10 for this event and are in the planning stages now. If you would like to help, please give me a call at 532-2345 so I can have your name and number to call you for our first planning meeting.
We are very excited to announce that beginning in just one week, we will be switching over our Shelter software to Pet Point which is a much better program and this program will allow us to give every new adopter one free month of Pet Care Insurance. This is an exciting product and an added value to your adoption package.
If you would like to help the shelter, there are many programs on-line that you can consider. If you use goodsearch.com for your internet web searches and designate the Houlton Humane Society as your charity of choice, funds will be donated to the Shelter each time you do a search.
If you are a gardener and are looking for spring seeds, you should try Botanical Interests – you can click on their link from our Shelter website and if you purchase seeds from their company they will make a donation to the shelter. I am personally anxious to see some ground and start planning a garden so I will be purchasing my seeds there.
If you go to myhometownhelper.com and look for the Houlton animal shelter grant requests, there are two that you could put comments on. One for a $1,000 grant to allow a board member to attend the Animal Care Expo coming up in May and another for $15,000 to allow us to establish a spay/neuter clinic for low income families. The more comments, the better our chances of winning.
We are really working hard to find the funds to send someone to the Animal Care Expo, there is nothing more valuable than education and this expo has over 40 training sessions over several days that would greatly assist our Shelter in improving operations. Without financial support, these educational opportunities are just not available to us so if you can click on that sight and offer your comments, we’d really appreciate it.
Please take a few minutes to stop by the Shelter and visit the animals waiting for new homes and if you have a special place in your heart and home, take one (or more) home with you. Check out www.houltonanimalshelter.com for photos of the many animals waiting for new homes.
