To the editor:
I begin by acknowledging and thanking Tom and Theresa Johnson for their viewpoint, which appeared in the March 19th publication of the Aroostook Republican. Tom and Theresa expressed their thanks, gratitude, pride in community and to those who made the Wellness and Recreation Center a reality. And as they stated, “it is quite a testament for the city to have this facility, as well as the Performing Arts Center as drawing cards.” The Johnsons also urge that now is the time to go ahead with Phases 2 and 3 – the weight room, climbing wall and the pool. And, as they indicate, the cost per square foot would be less, as Phase 1 was designed to include the electrical and plumbing to accommodate expansion.
I agree with this compelling point of view, but would look toward a citizens’ initiative to move the remainder of the project forward. One only needs to visit the Wellness and Recreation Center to witness the ongoing participation by young and not so young alike. So, if you’re not participating, what are you waiting for?
